Apparently Friedman made this comment about the upcoming negotiations with Barzal

" I believe the offer sheets will come''

I don't know if he went further into it but this could be an interesting story in the summer

We saw one last summer and that was quickly matched (essentially matched the second it was signed, but obviously Carolina made the Habs wait until the deadline). I mean, its possible but outside of some outrageous offer the Isles are going to quickly match.

Who's offer-sheeting him? It just doesn't make sense to give players $10m+. Very few teams have the wiggle room to make that fit without compromising other parts of their roster.

Offer-sheeting is more appealing to poach depth players IMO. If teams really wanted a guy like Kapanen last summer, that was a realistic option.

Whether it is post trade deadline or post July 1 writers get bored and talk offer sheets. And maybe someone offers Barzal 10.5m and Islanders match and big yawn.
$8,454,872 - $10,568,5892 First Round Picks
1 Second Round Pick
1 Third Round Pick

Exactly... Someone has to be willing to offer 4 x 1st rounders for it to even not be a complete waste of time. Even then, I just don't see it.

Wasn't every RFA going to get an offer sheet last year too?
Nothing to suggest it didn't happen, just that it wasn't reported on. I'm sure restricted free agents receive offer sheets every year, it's just rare that they sign them and I can't see Barzal signing one either.

Friedman is on record basically saying that he will always say that offer sheets are coming because he feels its such an intuitive route to take that he always believes they'll come, even if past evidence suggests they won't. So, when he says this, its almost like a joke.

It did last year... just Point declined and Bergevin bungled it

If I was looking at speeding up my teams development and looking to make an offer sheet this off-season or next

I'd say Barzal would be a top 5 target. Sill other guys I would really go for.

I'm not saying offer sheets wont or dont happen, just that Friedman thinks they will happen way more than they ever do or will. So, while Barzal might receive an offer sheet, I dont read much into Friedman saying this.

Hopefully the Islanders will trade the Sabres our 3rd round pick so we can offer sheet their player. An offer sheet, one of the few weapons the Sabres should use and they can’t even do that. :(
