what positions need veteran players in hockey, football, baseball, and basketball?
I would suppose it depends on the person and teammates. Nothing is what I'd call universal. But though I don't follow baseball as I once did, I would want a veteran catcher especially with a young pitching staff.
Prop forwards in rugby. You want a grisly 35 year old veteran anchoring at least one side of your scrum.
You want a veteran big on your team in basketball. A guy who knows how to use his body to box out, rebound, post up etc. David Robinson, Olajuwon, Duncan, Mailman, Kareem, Alonzo Mourning all still effective from their mid to late 30s.
Having said that Jason Kidd won an NBA title at 38 and was the old head on the 2008 Redeem team...... John Stockton played till he was like 60 years old. A vet point guard is a good asset to a team - experienced, good decision making, unflappable in high pressure situations.
In baseball a veteran #1 catcher is a must IMO.
