For S&Gs, I decided to see what the matchups would have been like with no COVID. I know the data is likely skewed because who knows what the season series would have been against Toronto, Boston or Montreal, but I also find it a little sad that arguably 3 of the top 5 teams reside in a single division which means one of them will be out in the first round. Some intriguing matchups for sure, and the fact the Pacific Division was so historically bad that Dallas and Chicago both get screwed because of it. The standings are ordered by Win % to mitigate the fact that some teams have played more or less than others.

Very cool look thanks for sharing.

The 1-8 format was scrapped a couple years ago for a divisional playoff format. We would actually be playing Toronto here.

3 locks from each division and the next best 2 regardless of division are the wild cards. Worst wild card plays the division champion with the most points and the other is sent to the other division. 2 plays 3 in each division.

Nice work...

But kind of pointless though...

Also, you are saying that 3 of the top 5 teams reside in a single division. Based on what exactly? Tampa, FLA and CAR are top 3 in the central, that's it. There's no such thing as "league standing" or "conference standing" this year. It just doesn't make sense to compare win % between teams that haven't played each other at all.

TB, CAR and FLA are not only top 3 in the central, but also the #1, 3, 5 teams by win% in the entire NHL. That is what I used to measure the standings since teams haven't played the same amount of games yet.

I agree it's a bit skewed because the head to heads are not there, but that's very top heavy compared to the other divisions and only the West comes close.

Top 3 by Win% in the divisions as follows:

East: WSH 7, PIT 9, BOS 10
Central: CAR 1, TB 3, FLA 5
North: TOR 6, EDM 11, WPG 13
West: VGS 2, COL 4, MIN 8

Thanks! I wasn't positive on the matchups with the WCs and whether the 2-3 matches stayed in division or crossed.

A bit?

It's not a bit skewed, it's completely irrelevent. You just can't say that FLA is #3 "in the entire NHL" if they haven't played a single game outside their division. Divisions are like 4 little leagues this year.

I think it was fun. Everyone knows it isn’t the real thing. I enjoyed an alternate view outside the box.

Statistically, you're right. But we also have to work with what we have. And I'm saying that FLA is #5 at the moment. Either way, I really don't think there'd be all THAT much movement since NHL teams are NHL teams and there's still a baseline skill level to be there (fancy way of saying "any given team...").

As I said, it was an interesting exercise regardless.
