The song itself is sweet. It's a simple, catchy melody with an uplifting message that fits its time.

The problem is the bombastic hype. The song suffers from bloated importance and author-overreach. Imagine became the anthem for John and Yoko's campaign of love & peace, his vision of how the world could be if we gave peace a chance. But while Lennon's place in music history continues to grow, his philosophies have started looking more like those of a naive and privileged rock star who was totally out of touch. Smart guy, epic musical talent, but woefully under-qualified to lecture politicians and us common folk.

That's what I believe is behind the blowback against Imagine. As a song, it's really nice. As a manifesto, it's embarrassingly childish.
