Playoff scoring - misc data

Here are a few tables of data regarding playoff scoring that may (or may not) be useful.

Notes:

1. In the event that multiple players are tied for the lead in a statistic, all players get full credit for the lead (same for 2nd place, 3rd place, etc).

2. The first three tables (team leaders), and the last three tables (percentage of team scoring) cover the entire history of the NHL (that is, 1917-18 to present).

3. The middle three tables (playoff leaders) cover the 1926-27 postseason to the present.

4. I spot-checked some of the data and it looks fine, but let me know if you see any errors.

5. I realized this after I posted everything - for the last set of tables (percentage of team scoring), I didn't make any allowances for games missed. The reader can decide if these numbers are still useful.

A few quick observations:

- Like father, like son. The Hulls have the top two spots (Hull senior sharing the runner-up position with the Rocket).

- Marleau is in very impressive company.

- Interesting to see the two Lemieuxs (Mario and Claude) tied.

- I would have thought that Bure led his team in goal-scoring in the playoffs more than twice (though he only participated in the post-season five times).

A few quick observations:

- This is yet another playmaking statstic where Gretzky dominates. His lead here, while objectively impressive, is actually rather pedestrian by his standards.

- As a primarily defensive defenseman, Chris Chelios looks great here. Sergei Zubov also ranks higher than I expected.

- A few players with weaker playoff reputations (Turgeon, Thornton and, to a lesser extent, Oates) look pretty good here.

- I'm surprised that Lemieux and Sakic led their teams in assists just three times in the playoff throughout their careers.

A few quick observations:

- Another offensive statistic where Gretzky dominates - yawn.

- Although Maurice Richard is often recognised as the top playoff performer of his era, Howe actually led his team in scoring far more often (10 times compared to 4). Howe also led the playoffs in scoring six times, compared to Richard's two times.

- Obviously this list doesn't distinguish between a player being the main option on a team lacking depth, and someone who stands out on a strong club. Thus, Fedorov's performance is more impressive than, say, Hawerchuk's even though they both led their team the same number of times.

- As was the case on the assists lists, Thornton and (especially) Oates look quite good for players who have disappointing playoff reputations.

- Ovechkin's playoff resume is inferior to Crosby's (clearly), but he led his team in scoring seven times in the eight season he was in the playoffs.

Alex Ovechkin | 84 | 82 | 204 | 40.2%

Ovechkin can score with the best of them (or marginally behind the very best of them), but I would think this is illustrative of Ovechkin's lack of goal support from his second line.

That's actually a phenomena that goes up and down the list. It's a lot of good playoff performances whose Cup hopes were marred by weak second lines. In the top 15 it's really just Gretzky, Lemieux, Sakic, Crosby, and Howe who have 2+ Cups.

Forsberg does have 2, but missed the decisive chunk of 2001. Howe has three complete runs, but that may be watered down by sheer longevity. Crosby ranks high for the short runs of brilliance against Ottawa or the Islanders, which make up for the comparatively weak showing this year (19 points, 73 team goals).

And who would have though Leetch would be the top defender? (Although NYR consistently missing the playoffs during his downswing sweetens his sample to include ages 20-28, plus a still good 2004 - 8 PT/27 TMG - at age 35.)
