If the AHL wants to be the sample package for the NHL to ensure that each team gets "Participation Points" for being in the post season, that rather defeats the purpose of having a regular season. Rather than adding teams, why not spur teams to be MORE focused on winning and only taking the top two teams in each division?

This isn't the first time they've done this...Back in 01-02 the AHL had a play-in type of format for the playoffs. Took the top 10 teams in the conference and 7,8,9,10 had play-in series.

Good catch. They called them "Qualifiers" - two best-of-3 series in each conference.

Yeah reason I know this is because the Wolves actually had to play in it their first year in the league. Remember it because Wolves goaltender Frederic Cassivi played in it because Wolves #1 goaltender Pasi Nurminen was still up with Atlanta at the time. Cassivi made a ridiculous save late in a game, mightve even been in OT, to keep the Wolves in it and then they went on to win the cup that year.
