Not saying you’re wrong or right, that’s just a lot.
It is, but it's hard to deny the impact of those players as well as their importance to the franchise.
Quick has broken essentially all of the franchise goaltending records, Conn Smythe winner, several Jennings trophies.
Doughty is breaking the d-man franchise records and has a Norris.
Kopitar is the Kings first Selke winner and a 2-timer.
Brown captained the franchise's first 2 Stanley Cup wins.

I do not believe to retired numbers, at least in way they are out of circulation and use permanently. (I don't get why there couldn't be several same numbers hanging in rafters).

Saku Koivu of Montreal Canadiens. Its injustice keep him out there.

I think ONLY reason he is not there already is the relative over population of jerseys of past legends hanging there already, and relatively unsuccessful period for the team (compared to it's historical successes that were reason for most jersey retirements of the team). He was the face of franchise. He was that even then normal everyday dudes would've hanged their skates already long ago. He didn't leave the team. He even tried to meet critisism for not speaking French. How many cancer patient kids he saved directly by his efforts?

He was the captain, and he was that from the edge of grave.

Team Finland had no troubles retire his number, and that is even more questionable habit than it is for a franchise team. Credits where credits due.

Thornton and Marleau in SJ, maybe Pavs as well

Not if he retired now, but I'm fairly confident at least #55 Scheifele will be up in Winnipeg one day

Definitely Stamkos. I can see argument for Hedman eventually if he plays out his career here. No one else on the Lightning is at the level though.

#4 Chris Phillips - while playing for the Senators he scored the cup winning goal for the Anaheim Ducks in 2007. Travis Moen was credited for his goal.

The Pens for me:
Yes to 68, 71, 87
No to 58, 81
Maybe to 29 - I think he gets bashed here a lot but he was a part of three cup teams playing pivotal roles in two (along with carrying the team to the finals in 08), always did right by the franchise (even though they did everything they could to screw up his development), and was adored by the majority of fans. I'd put his number up if it were my decision but I understand the arguments against it.

In Montreal, no one on the current roster deserve to have his number retired. Yep even Price (for Price lovers) except if he wins the Stanley Cup in Montreal with the Conn Smythe. Because even if he will probably be the winningest Habs goalie in their history, he is not on Roy/Dryden/Plante tier.

And no Koivu as well. Standards are high in Montreal to deserve a such honor.

I must state preamble that I HATE the concept of retiring numbers. Especially numbers between 1 and 19.

That said, I don't like this idea of retiring his number at all!! I hope like hell they don't do it! Koivu is a good, decent player, but he's not an all-time great. Retiring his number would just set the bar lower than it already is. Besides, number 9 is retired in way too many teams as it is. Unless a player is a modern-day Gretzky, I don't want number 9 retired anywhere again. In fact, the only single digit number deserving of being retired right now is Ovechkin.

Koivu wouldn't lower the bar anymore, he'd just be another great player that was really impactful to a particular franchice without being a "league" great. Players that you just associate as that team.

Linden, Lehtenen, Broten, Doan, Elias. Koivu isn't out of place with any of them.

Bondra and Kolzig for Washington.

I know its not the highest standard but its more worthy than Gartner, Hunter, and Labre.

as a Wings fan I would be against retiring Datsyuk's number after him walking out on an active contract

Zetterberg sure

37 is a no-brainer. I’m not as keen on 33 going up, but it likely will.

40 and 63 just aren’t as successful and talented. Rask has carried the Bruins to one Finals appearance - hardly “retirement worthy.” There are four other Bruins goalies with Cup Championships and none of them have a number retired. Marchand isn’t even an alternate captain on the Bruins. As much as I like him, I don’t think 63 goes up.
