you know what linemate record the sedins might have a semi-realistic shot at? most shared assists by teammates. i.e., most goals scored by a third teammate assisted by both henrik and daniel sedin.

other contenders are obvious: howe/delvecchio, gretzky/kurri, gretzky/coffey, combinations of those three islanders superstars... but here's where jagr/francis probably makes the list.

so... i guess... yet another stats table request for matnor, with all due respect for the hard work.

What exactly is your source for all this information? I ask this because I know not of any source providing such detailing game-by-game information prior to the 87-88 season. It's not that I don't want to trust you, but one shouldn't just instantly take unsourced information on the internet at face value these days.

The data come from the Hockey Summary Project, which is compiled by a lot different people. You can get access to the data by joining the Yahoo group. The data do contain some errors but it typically doesn't differ more than one or two points per player and season.

I was going to bypass the obvious Gretzky-Kurri combo and suggest that Delvecchio and Howe would be pretty high up there only to see that in the list they are already.

As a Leaf fan, I thought Sittler-McDonald would be there somewhere. I realize Lanny left in 1979 but since Paul Henderson's goals assisted by Norm Ullman are on there I thought it would be too. The lowest on that list was 111. I would have thought for sure Sittler-McDonald was on there with at least that many.

Here's Sittler-McDonald:

Rank | Goalscorer | Playmaker | Nr goals | Share
91. | Lanny McDonald | Darryl Sittler | 91 | 18.2%

A couple things stand out for me from that list:

- No significant contributor to Lafleur and the amount of goals he scored.
- Same with Brett Hull, which is even more amazing.
- Didn't matter who Lemieux played with, he was gonna score.
- Bossy's chemistry or reliance (or both) on two of the greatest playmakers of his era: Trottier and Potvin.

Top 5 for Lafleur:

Rank | Goalscorer | Playmaker | Nr goals | Share
52. | Guy Lafleur | Stephen Shutt | 110 | 19.6%
114. | Guy Lafleur | Larry Robinson | 83 | 14.8%
144. | Guy Lafleur | Peter Mahovlich | 77 | 13.8%
228. | Guy Lafleur | Jacques Lemaire | 66 | 11.8%
340. | Guy Lafleur | Guy Lapointe | 55 | 9.8%

Top 5 for Hull:

Rank | Goalscorer | Playmaker | Nr goals | Share
82. | Brett Hull | Adam Oates | 94 | 12.7%
281. | Brett Hull | Jeff Brown | 60 | 8.1%
399. | Brett Hull | Craig Janney | 51 | 6.9%
468. | Brett Hull | Mike Modano | 47 | 6.3%
562. | Brett Hull | Brendan Shanahan | 44 | 5.9%
562. | Brett Hull | Peter Zezel | 44 | 5.9%

Top 5 for Lemieux:

Rank | Goalscorer | Playmaker | Nr goals | Share
91. | Mario Lemieux | Jaromir Jagr | 91 | 13.2 %
178. | Mario Lemieux | Paul Coffey | 72 | 10.4 %

Makes you realise how rare it is to have 2 guys play together long enough and be good enough to put up those kinds of number.

The lack of Mario's name on that list (either as scorer or assister) kinda jumped out at me but when you think about it he never had a long spell with anybody. It was what 4 years with Coffey? a little more time with Jagr but not always as regular line mates.

Only 5 of the top 12 NHL all time assist leaders appear on that list.

Not appearing are

2 Ron Francis
4 Ray Bourque
6 Adam Oates
7 Steve Yzerman
8 Jaromir Jagr
11 Mario Lemieux
12 Joe Sakic

Kind of surprised that Forsberg didn't make the top 50. Didn't he play with Hejduk for years?

That's a bit trickier. From 87/88 it could be done, but before that, the HSP data does not always give information on the rosters for each game.

I'm beyond impressed that Bossy-to-Trottier (yeah, you've read this right) is #5 of all time! Guess Mike was not just a one-dimensional trigger after all.:handclap:

I liked seeing that too :yo: - as an '80s kid I had to defend my guy on a lot of playgrounds and school cafeterias to the Lafleur, McDonald (grew up in Toronto...go figure) and Kurri camps.

Kind of hard to calculate. I guess we can only do actual games they suited up together. Trottier/Bossy are certainly 1977-78 through most of 1986-87 -- Bossy's whole career, so 752 games, minus whatever games Trottier missed. I'm guessing they suited up for about 735 games together? That would work out to one Trottier-to-Bossy goal every 2.4 games.

Gretzky/Kurri suited up for Edmonton 1980-81 through 1987-88, and L.A. 1991-92 through most of 1995-96. I'm guessing they dressed together for about 570 games with Edmonton. But adding in the L.A. years reduces the productivity. Together in Edmonton and L.A., they played in 858 games together, which then works out to one Gretzky-to-Kurri goal every 2.35 games.

So, Jari/Wayne win per-game as well, but slightly. However, if we knew the exact number of Wayne-to-Jari goals in Edmonton alone, no doubt it would crush Trots-to-Boss with the NYI.

(Note my games number for Trots-Boss in New York is just a guess based on the stats. I'm sure someone out there has the correct number. But I'm 99% sure the 858 games that Gretzky/Kurri suited up together for is correct.)

My bad, btw: I braincramped badly, focussing on Trottier's earlier career start and somehow convincing myself they only played eight seasons together in New York. That was careless.

The rough GPG calculation does suggest Bossy was less reliant on Trottier for direct feeds than Kurri was Gretzky, but the differences in team attack styles accounts for a little of that. That everyone knew 99 was looking for 17 but were so often overmatched is delicious; I take nearly as much pleasure from that as the notion Bossy fed Trottier at nearly twice the "share" rate the Oiler winger fed his centre. I like numbers that prove Bossy wasn't a Brett Hull-style pure finisher. Because he wasn't.

It appears our respective favourite C-RW pairings are the two most dominant in NHL history. Nice company.

Top 5 for Lafleur:

Rank | Goalscorer | Playmaker | Nr goals | Share

228. | Guy Lafleur | Jacques Lemaire | 66 | 11.8%
340. | Guy Lafleur | Guy Lapointe | 55 | 9.8%

Thanks Matnor. Can you believe that Lemaire was Lafleur's centerman for 3 years? Little M was his c-man for only a couple. This data will support my thesis on how Lemaire resented Lafleur when they played together and how he acted this out when he got behind the bench. ;)

oh wow, thanks for running the numbers. i must say, the degree of their lead surprises even me.

and i'm feeling more than a little bit proud that i correctly predicted the top four. surprised jagr and francis are so far down the list though, and especially surprised that getzlaf and perry have already surpassed them. i'm guessing there's a lot of PP goals by selanne in those 87 shared assists.

I'm beyond impressed that Bossy-to-Trottier (yeah, you've read this right) is #5 of all time! Guess Mike was not just a one-dimensional trigger after all.:handclap:

True.

Equally lost among the stereotyping of players is the fact that Trottier was an elite offensive producer. That's often lost in the "great all around player" cliche.

you know what linemate record the sedins might have a semi-realistic shot at? most shared assists by teammates. i.e., most goals scored by a third teammate assisted by both henrik and daniel sedin.

other contenders are obvious: howe/delvecchio, gretzky/kurri, gretzky/coffey, combinations of those three islanders superstars... but here's where jagr/francis probably makes the list.

so... i guess... yet another stats table request for matnor, with all due respect for the hard work.

do people really forget that he won an art ross?

I dont' see the chart anywhere. Might be interesting to update with the Sedin's retiring.

Unfortunately, all the old tables didn't survive the migration to the new board.

But now that the official boxscores are available, hopefully one of the spreadsheet experts on here can provide an updated list. There's already been a lot of great data posted here over the past few months.

i spent way too long the other day trying to find a cache of these tables on archive.org and google.

i would love to see the table for number of times two players assisted on the same goal, if anyone can kindly run the numbers.

it came to light in last night's broadcast that the sedins own two goofy records: henrik has the most regular season overtime assists of all time, while daniel has the most regular season overtime powerplay goals of all time. but this is actually a meaningful record that shows their uniqueness.

now if you'll excuse me, i have some tearing up to get back to.
