so what would it take for the Redwings to take JJ off our hands i wonder. they have stated they are open for business taking unwanted players/contacts

Probably someone like POJ. Which we could do now after adding Matheson. As well as other dmen prospects in Maniscalco, Reilly, Lindgren, etc.

It would be another asset that I wouldnt want to lose(to go with Hallander and Addison) but not all prospects pan out and if clearing 3.25 mil gets us a 3C like Haula....it would be worth it.

No, it's not going to take that much nor would we pay that. I'm quite certain if Detroit's demand was POJ, JR would simply keep JJ and I would support that.

The other thing to consider is keeping JJ into the season and see which teams end up needing dman help around Late-Jan/Feb or to see if there is another Rask like deal that allows you to swap. Every year there's a team that makes a trade for a need or has an under performing contract they want to move.

If gambling on matheson gets rid of JJ, then moving Hornqvist was a win... Matheson has potential, JJ is a penalty kill specialist with a physical edge who can shot block... Matheson seems to at least check those boxes

The reality remains that Hornqvist should have been dealt his Ufa year when it was obvious that crosby didn’t want to play with him... it was obvious he and Malkin were not going to be the best fit, and there was no need for him on a third line....

Agree that we could just wait and we wouldnt have to give up nearly as much.

1. It would mean that team only has to pay for JJ for 2 more years anyway so that alone helps.

2. Like you said, with injuries happening...we see a lot of moves for dmen like JJ happen at the deadline. And with the cap situation not being a prob like it is to start this year...that wont factor in. By next off season the cap will go back up and things will be sorted out. JJ at 2 years x 3.25 isnt a big deal at all.

JJ is statistically terrible on the PK.

And if he was dealt then...coming off b2b cup wins and a playoffs where he scored 11 pts in 10 games we would have gotten a very good return. These last two years hurt his value only because of how we used him. Teams that are contenders would have been lining up to add someone like PH. The leafs for example wanting to add more grit and experience for their young top 3. Imo they still should have been a team that traded for him. Even with their cap situation.

Instead of being so focused on trying to add Pietrangelo, I think someone like PH would do wonders for their young group of stars. The Avs as well are another team.

You think the Leafs or Avs want to add 34 year old Hornqvist at 5.25?

Hornqvist with Malkin was successful. I don’t know why people keep saying it was a bad fit. Malkin had his best regular season production playing with Hornqvist and Hagelin since 2011/12 and was arguably better in the D zone than back then.

If you go through the metrics the results were very favourable with those 2 together.

Now obviously the coaching staff or JR didn’t want them together anymore so that’s why he’s gone but I just thought I’d point out that the results were good for those 2. Maybe it didn’t look pretty to some but results matter.

It was good for a month or two and then fell off because nobody on that line can drive play individually but Malkin.

Like every time Hagelin was with Geno.

This team has far too many hopes for me.

I hope Rust doesn't have too much of a regression.
I hope Marino doesn't have a sophomore slump.
I hope Kapanen fits in the top 6.
I hope Jarry is ready to be a #1.
I hope Poulin is ready for L3.
I hope McCann can figure something out.
I hope Matheson is Schultz 2.0 and not Jultz 3.0.
I hope the assistant coaches make a significant impact and can help Sully get his head out of his ass.
I hope JR can get a good return on Murray.
I hope JR can dump JMFJ without too much pain.
I hope JR can find a somewhat significant piece to pair with McCann and Poulin.
I hope JR can find a 3RD better than Ruhwedel.

I'm more confident towards the top of the list, but there's a lot of things that are going to have to break the Penguins way for me to have any faith in this team getting where they want to be.

Simon does enough other things that I'm not worried about his underwhelming production away from Crosby. He's a 3rd line playmaker who's decent enough defensively that it's not an issue. No he doesn't have Lafferty's speed, but his ability to hang onto the puck and make plays with it is worth more then Lafferty's speed and overall lack of offense. Lafferty is a nice 13/12F. But you don't want him anywhere but L4. Maybe he takes another step but at 25 I'd say the odds (which are small for most players) are even smaller. And until he takes that step, you don't scratch him for Simon.

Simon is pretty underrated. I think he and McCann would work pretty well.

I hope we can get Sheary back for cheap too to be on Sid's RW.
