Let us discuss the horrible possibilities of trades and pretend it will make this team better.

It's a broken record for 3+ years. This team has to rely on lucky comeback efforts too much.

Even when you watch generally shitty teams, there just looks to be a flow and threat so much more than the Pens.

It has been objectively successful, sure, more wins than losses etc

But it is so much more fun to watch other teams play the game of hockey.

WHY!?!?!?!?!

Also, @Gurglesons
Remember this pic I did from before the season....I still havent changed my mind:

How about Tanev and Sceviour for DeAngelo. Would u do that?
Is there a quoted post I cant see here? What am I missing?

Leaving aside the obvious, just from a roster perspective, no. Honka, Capobianco and Coburn on waivers tells me that there is D help out there available for free this year. We just need to hold things down for a few weeks and we will start getting bodies back.

And also POJ's emergence will probably make someone expendable in the offseason. Someone who might actually get us a real return. Not some far gone reclamation project or guy nobody wants.

f*** no. We already can't defend. 28th GA/G. Worse than Detroit. Dude had 16 takeaways and 65 giveaways last year
Are we trying to set a record for giveaways on the blue line, with him, Tanger and Matheson? Maybe Ceci will contribute too when he regresses.

Plus Crosby would be forced to knock him out after he makes some nasty comment to Jarry post-game.

Agreed. Now is an absolutely great time to figure out if POJ is able to be a consistent NHL player, and if he's ready to take the next step, then you ship out a blueliner, not Tanev.

Three concerns are Dumo with his injuries and his play after his ankle. He may be the LTIR guy from here. Matheson needs to play and then see what he either can become or not become. That contract is an albatross which is not a giant issue but still you can't have much flexibility with that length. Look they had to buy out JJ with such a bad signing as to length. Fortunately Tanev looks to be a good signing but we know that will be a problem a couple years out.

Thirdly, they have to move on from the speed and right side of the puck nonsense. They need size at forward and at least some D. Poulin, OConnor, Legare have decent size and POJ does play bigger than his reported size. Petts has to go as POJ is simply better and unload that contract. Petts can bring a decent to good asset back. No more tweeners like ERod or the forward from florida who adds nothing. From here drafting, roster construction and cap management will be key for the next GM.

edit: did not see that @SomeDude beat me to what I say below.

Here's the only way I see a DeAngelo trade working out for the Pens:
  1. The Pens decide that Matheson isn't working out and want to trade him.
  2. The Rangers accept to take Matheson at his full cap hit in a 1-for-1 trade of he and DeAngelo.
  3. DeAngelo is then on the "taxi squad" but doesn't join and stays away from the team.
  4. The Pens then buyout DeAngelo in the offseason.
The Pens then go from having Matheson for 5 seasons after this one at $4.875M to buying out DeAngelo for this:
