Hornqvist. They've got a 250 minute sample of solid results and it makes sense because Hornqvist needs a puck transporter and sniper, and McCann needs someone who'll go to the dirty areas and cause chaos for him to live off. Ideally the third member of the line is less Marleau, who basically splits the difference between them, and more like one of the Dominiks - a winger who'll line up the shots for them - and it's a shame we don't have them this post-season, but long term a player like that can be found for the line.

But McCann-Hornqvist is a solid foundation.
I was also thinking that Simon might go well with McCann; since the goal is to get McCann to shoot more, he might be the one center who won't insist on passing the puck back to Simon.

I think we have too many guys who just don't specialize in anything. The 4th line specializes in defensive play. The top line is what it is--still needs a RW, imo. That second line is perfect. The third line is just a mishmash of guys who don't really hurt you when they're out there, but don't really add anything to set them apart either, minus Hornqvist. McCann, again, is a guy I have a lot of optimism for with regard to hitting a ceiling like Rust, but he just seems to be pulled in too many directions to really make any headway. Bjugstad is the poster boy for "won't hurt you, but won't do a damn thing for you either" when he's on the ice. Simon's in a weird limbo where he's either on Sid and Jake's wing, or he's got no spot--and I really don't think he's the answer to that wing spot. Not as a stop-gap, nor as a long-term guy. Marleau's probably best suited to play the 4th line, Cullen role as a winger, but our 4th line is pretty set as is. I don't really think Marleau's going to bring anything to the third line, but I hope I'm wrong. I think he just needs fewer minutes and a more tactical deployment to get the most out of the guy.

Really, the only thing holding us back for the foreseeable future at forward is the same thing that's been holding us back for several seasons; the 3C spot and the RW spot alongside Sid and Jake. I like McCann at wing, and think he's got a better shot at hitting his ceiling there. Hornqvist, expensive as he is, does what he does wherever--and while I'd rather not be locked into a $5.3 million/yr third line winger/PP specialist, we don't really have any other option until his NTC ends.

Simon is a peculiar case. His last season in the Czech league he scored 18 in 52 games (0.346 g/g), second best on the team. It looks like he played in all games and no other names on the roster stood out. Shooting percentage was 16.1%.

Simon's first season in WBS he scored 25 goals in 68 games (0.368 g/g). That was most on the team. It looks like he was healthy that season and even got 3 games in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, I don't know who his common linemates were in WBS. Shooting percentage was 18.7%.

The next season also seems to be a healthy one for Simon. But his goal production dipped to 15 goals in 70 games (0.214 g/g). The difference certainly wasn't in powerplay goals since he only scored one fewer when compared to the previous season. Shooting percentage? 10.5%.

His last partial season in WBS he scored 4 in 21 games (0.190 g/g) with a shooting percentage of 7.7%.

His goal scoring [and shooting percentage to a lesser extent] did the opposite of what I expect a developing player's to do. This makes me think he had an injury of some sort in the summer of 2016.

It should be noted that his assists per game in WBS increased every season by about 33%. Maybe he just decided to be a playmaker first?

Any WBS-watchers have some insight? @Mr Jiggyfly @steelcityassault

I will take two cups with a chance for another with Zucker in the top 6. Phil did his time here and needed to be moved.

Think his ability to transition the puck could really open up a lot of opportunities for Sid's line.

Yup. Peek at the Canucks forum and it looks like it's coming back not in shape, plus the whole general annoying everyone thing.

Let him rot elsewhere sez I.

Holy ****. Sometimes I don't get these kids . . .

He did that? f*** that, he can stay in Vancouver...don't need idiots like that on the team.
I mean I still wanted him for Pouliot, he's a moron, but he's got a wicked shot and he's a kid that could really be a damn good powerforward for the Pens. The idiot work is taken out when you put him with solid talent like Sid or Geno and tell him all he has to do is stay open use his size and drive to the net. Which he can do.

Would you do Poulin for Virtanen straight up if you could sign Virtanen to a reasonable long term deal? I'm really unsure on that when I'm trying to think about it right now, because the upside of a Guentzel-Crosby-Virtanen line is downright insane but there is definitely risks of making that trade.

I don't think the two have vastly different potentials, I think Virtanen's upside is similar to Poulin's and Virtanen's current ability is a safe guess for what Poulin ends up. But Virtanen is like 5 years older and will cost more. I think Virtanen could be a 50 point power forward that skates really well with Crosby and Guentzel, but if Virtanen doesn't mesh with Crosby, you've kinda screwed unless you move Hornqvist. Poulin doesn't have that risk since he also plays LW.

I think Poulin for Virtanen would be similar to Poulin for Kapanen, and I'd be equally as unsure on that trade
