still hate this player, which sucks because Pitt has so many players I'm fond of, but this is a good deal for both parties. He swallows his pride and stays with a team that took a chance with him, and let's him try and improve his game by being in a smaller role. For Pittsburgh it's a good deal because he showed some promise, and if it doesn't work out, he's gone next season, or can be buried with minimal cap hit staying on their books.

I'm way good with this.

Suitable 3rd pairing guy that can quarterback PP2.

Nice to see him taking a pretty significant paycut to stay with the Pens.

I like it. Very low risk deal and gives him more time to work with Gonchar/Martin plus it gives the Pens more PP options if Letang misses any time.

Schultz back to being paid what he's worth. Good for him, I expect he will have a good season now that his career is back on track and he doesn't have ridiculous expectations hanging over his head anymore.

Figured the odds of him signing elsewhere were somewhere in the neighborhood of 5% after the first couple days of free agency, but I wasn't expecting him to come this cheaply at all. Damn, Jimmy.

He was solid enough as a third pairing PP specialist who needed to be insulated. Hopefully another year working with Gonchar means he won't need to be insulated so much.

Well it's because he's not great, his QO was over 3 million. No way he was getting anywhere close to that

$3.9 million, I believe. Nobody expected that, but given the complete lack of right-handed PMDs on the market it wasn't a stretch to imagine someone would have offered him half of that and just hoped he could work it out. I was almost certain that he would wind up back in Pittsburgh, but I didn't think it'd be at under $2 million.

Low risk high reward..... This might be a great deal for both the penguins and Shultz. Pittsburgh was a good situation for him. I wonder if Derrick Pouliot's days are now number. Both are similar players.

If you watched him play in Edmonton you'd be shocked he's still in the league.

Good for the Penguins, they get a good player at a good price, keeping together more of the cup-winning team.

Better for Schultz, since he stays in an environment that was clearly good for him. Moving on would have been foolish.

love the deal for the pens. The amount of depth the pens have on D right now is awesome. Sure Schultz isnt great. Neither are any of the other guys they signed this summer but i love the way they have added a ton of potential bottom pairing defensemen for very cheap this summer

Similar, but Pouliot is a lefty and Schultz is a righty, so there is space for both of them on the team, especially running the system that Sullivan does. The only problem is they're both third pairing caliber at the moment and you can't pair them together. At least having Ian Cole being able to play both sides helps there.

Regardless I don't think Pouliot isn't long for Pittsburgh because of the expansion draft, so it wouldn't surprise me if he is dangled as trade bait at some point.
