I see its this as basically 3.5 x 6yrs they want him for over the summer if you include the team friendly deal this year.

He took a one year 875k because the pens couldnt say him long term over the summer. So the cost for doing that is basically the 500k extra on the cap.

Andersson got 4.5 and they are comparable players - this is fine. He's really established himself as a top 4 the past two seasons. Pittsburgh has a great top 4 with Dumoulin - Letang and Pettersson - Marino.

He's only 23 and has been a 2nd pair defender for his tenure here. He's struggled this year but what 23-year old defenseman hasn't? $4 mil is probably steep for how he's played this year, but I think the player we've seen this year is his absolute floor.

Seems like you don't know who Pettersson is

Pretty standard long-term deal for a top-4 D. Olli Maatta got basically the same contract 4 years ago and the cap is about $10 million higher now than it was then. It's a perfectly reasonable deal for a young middle pair DFD with upside.

I hope Petts emulates the former over the latter, but I'm very happy to have him locked up. He deserves it, too, having taken a team-friendly deal this year.

It's second paring defenseman money. So seems fine . Maybe slightly too much but he's still pretty young . Very much in the mold of the Dumoulin/Maatta contracts and very moveable if need be.

He’s been great since he got here and with a 100+ game sample size is a legitimate 2nd pairing d-man and at 23 still might have the upside to be even better. $4 million for 4-6 years is what most expected.

Slightly overpaid this year given he has regressed a tad bit, but in a couple years this will look like good value. JR has nicely retooled the defense minus the JJ signing. Hopefully this indicates we move on from Schultz this off-season.
