I see its this as basically 3.5 x 6yrs they want him for over the summer if you include the team friendly deal this year.

He took a one year 875k because the pens couldnt say him long term over the summer. So the cost for doing that is basically the 500k extra on the cap.

No problem with this. Thought it was going to be 3 x 4m so getting him for an extra 2 years at the same hit is pretty good if he continues to progress.

The Dumoulin/Maatta special.

I hope Petts emulates the former over the latter, but I'm very happy to have him locked up. He deserves it, too, having taken a team-friendly deal this year.

4m in today's cap is absolutely nothing. It's number 4 dman pay.

Remember that number one defenseman will get paid 11m+ going forward now.

The days of Lidstrom or Chara making 7.5m a year are long long gone.
Roman Josi didn't. His cap hit is $9M.

John Carlson, signed last year, is at $8M

Terrible contracts like those given to Drew Doughty shouldn't be the norm.

It's second paring defenseman money. So seems fine . Maybe slightly too much but he's still pretty young . Very much in the mold of the Dumoulin/Maatta contracts and very moveable if need be.

He’s been great since he got here and with a 100+ game sample size is a legitimate 2nd pairing d-man and at 23 still might have the upside to be even better. $4 million for 4-6 years is what most expected.

Slightly overpaid this year given he has regressed a tad bit, but in a couple years this will look like good value. JR has nicely retooled the defense minus the JJ signing. Hopefully this indicates we move on from Schultz this off-season.
