    To PIT :
    Jesse Puljujarvi
    Kris Russell

    To EDM:
    Daniel Sprong
    Olli Maatta

McDavid could use a sniper like Sprong on his wing and I think Puljujarvi's combination of size and speed would do wonders for the penguins.

I'd probably do it, I've liked Sprong since he was drafted. How's he been trending?

He's not being given a legitimate chance...stuck in a situation of being behind a lot of depth and being waiver eligible. Honestly I'm not sure how much better of a shot Puljujarvi would be given if such a swap were to happen...Sullivan has little tolerance for youngsters making mistakes.

Ooooof that's a bad deal for the Penguins. Wow, that's ugly. The only positive in this deal for the Penguins is that they can send Puljujarvi to the AHL, when they can't send Sprong down. They get a big downgrade on defense only to swap Sprong for a struggling former top pick.

I would love this deal, though I doubt the Pens would do it.

Woof that's bad for Pittsburgh. And yes I realize I make thrash proposals. I can still give my opinion.

I'd be fine with Bear or Jones instead of Russell too.

If Russell is willing to waive his NMC then I'd do the deal.

We’re having very different conversations if you’re after Bear or Jones. We cannot take additional cap back.

Personally, I wouldn't do this as an Oiler fan.

From what I've heard/read Maatta has really struggled the last couple years.

I'm not a huge Puljujarvi fan, but I still believe their is high upside there if he figures it out.

I'm not opposed to trading Puljujarvi, I would just prefer if it's in a package for a more established player.

    Why would Pens do this?

Is Maata even better than Russell right now? Does he play Rd well?

    Not interested from Edmonton.

This is a tough decision. I love JP and still think he's going to be a 30-30-60 winger. But to get rid of Russell for a much younger Maatta is intriguing. Russell is what he is. Maatta is about to enter his prime. Sprong is a goal scorer so him and JP offset. I don't know :help:

Oilers need scoring and fast. Someone to pair up with McDavid. I know this will probably be unrealistic but what would it take for Kessel?

Edit: nvm this is more unrealistic then I thought. Just realized his salary

Absolutely not, that Russell contract is toxic.

I just can't figure out what Sprong is going to be. I saw him in 2 games this season and both times he looked so lost, was a complete negative, and yet his AHL numbers are very good.

I'd probably do it just to upgrade Russel to Maata

It's honestly not that bad. Overpaid by 0.5 million max and one year too long.
Russ is a genuinely solid 4/5 guy.

Sprong is waiver eligible? Wow, that was fast. Wasn't he their most valuable trade asset at one time? His trade value receded faster than his hairline. :sarcasm:

In all seriousness, I wouldn't do it because Olli Maatta is ultimately a third pair LD on the Oilers' roster assuming he plays behind Oscar Klefbom and Darnell Nurse, which he would. The Oilers also employ Andrej Sekera, who is currently on the LTIR. This is an exorbitant cost for what the Oilers are ultimately getting.

AHL is a league where you can be a poor/slow skater and/or have 2-3x the amount of time+space to make a decision compared to the NHL. I have not watched him in the A or N so I don't know if either applies.

Funny how that's what a lot of people said about Jack Johnson. "He plays big minutes, he's better than the analytics say."

He genuinely isn't a 4-5 on a contender unless you're into giving up an insane number of shots close to the net. He is a net negative on the ice.

We already have one Jack Johnson, we don't need another.

Can't speak for JJ dont watch him much. But Russel is a #5 on pretty much every contender. Have you seen contenders bottom pairings?

Again, that's what every said about guys like Alzner/Johnson/etc.

These guys get ice time and reputations that leads to them getting a high pedigree and big contracts. If you have a net negative impact on the ice when you get on it, if you're unable to transition the puck and prevent quality chances against, if your big skill is blocking shots, a contending team is better off not having you.

Johnson was "Hey he may be a bit overpaid but at least he's better than the guys on your bottom pairing." Alzner was "Hey he might be a bit overpaid but at least he's better than plenty of guys on Montreal's blueline." Alzner's been scratched and Johnson might be soon. The NHL is changing and contenders can't afford to have liabilities on the ice anymore.
