January 1 will have three Kentucky Derby preps and each is worth 10 points to the winners.
  • The Jerome is at Aqueduct.
  • The Smarty Jones is the first of four to be held at Oaklawn.
  • The Sham is at Santa Anita. Sham finished second to Secretariat in the 1973 Kentucky Derby and is the answer to one of sports most interesting trivia questions in "Who ran the second fastest Kentucky Derby in history?" Sham is often forgotten as a non-winner of the race.

January 1, 2022 (part 1)

(THREE KENTUCKY DERBY PREPS)

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Track Conditions: Sloppy. Fog interfered with part of the broadcast, too.
  • Race 8: Courvoisier (Jose Ortiz/Kelly Breen) was sent off 4-to-1 and won the $150,000 Jerome Stakes which was a Kentucky Derby prep race. The winner received 10 points towards entry into the Derby. He was purchased for $600,000 in 2019. The son of Tapit has won twice in five starts and is 2-for-2 at Aqueduct. The race was first run in 1866 and was the 152nd edition. The most recent winner of this race to get a victory in the Kentucky Derby was Fusiachi Pegasus in 2000.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):

  • Race 9: Dash Attack (David Cohen/Kenny McPeek) was sent off 7-to-1 and won the $250,000 Smarty Jones Stakes which is the first of four Kentucky Derby preps to be run at the track. The winner received 10 points towards entry into the Derby. The son to Munnings was out for just the second time. He was one of just two in the field of 13 out for the second time.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 7: Newgrange (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) was sent off 5-to-2 and won the $100,000 Grade 3 Sham Stakes which is a Kentucky Derby prep race. The winner does not receive the 10 points normally awarded since Baffert is under a 2-year suspension to all Churchill Downs' properties. T-bred owners will have to make a decision, if the ban remains, as to whether to keep horses under Baffert's tutelage or send to other barns in order to gain entry into the Derby. Rockefeller (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) placed as the 3-to-2 favorite. The winner was purchased for $125,000 while the runnerup was bought for $750,000 by the same conglomerate as the winner.

January 1, 2022 (part 2)

Laurel (Maryland)

  • Track Conditions: Sloppy. Fog interfered with part of the broadcast, too.
  • Jevian Toledo rode a natural hat trick.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Pablo Morales had a 5-win day. He finished 8 5-1-1. He won both the early and late daily doubles, a rarity in itself.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Luis Saez won the first three races. He should be a lock to be a finalist for Eclipse Jockey of the Year for 2021.
  • Handle: $11.7 million.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Bob Baffert entered six races the past two days and won all six. He officially went 9 6-1-1.
  • Flavien Prat had an exceptional day even by his standards. He had a 6-win afternoon and finished 10 6-4-0. First or second on all 10 mounts, riding an entire card is almost unthinkable.

Flavien-Prat-wins-6-1-1-22-684x547.jpg

  • Race 2: Queen of Thorns (Flavien Prat/Peter Eurton) was absolutely brilliant in her maiden race and I am officially smitten. This was my pick of the day but at 4-to-5 offered little value; however, Violence on the male side out of an Unbridled's Song mare caught my eye and she looked picturesque in her win and also following the victory. Wow!

  • Race 6: Chewing Gum (Umberto Rispoli/Bill Mott) won the Grade2 $250,000 Joe Hernandez Stakes.
  • Race 8: Luck (Flavien Prat/Richard Baltas) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Robert Frankel Stakes.
  • Race 9: As Time Goes By (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 3 $200,000 LaCanada stakes in a romp by 13 1/2 lengths.
  • Handle: Roughly $14 million.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Dylan Davis rode three winners.
  • Race 7: Charlotte Webley (Steven Fret/Michael Simmonds) won at 15-to-1, the second longest odds. The jockey was probably unknown to many handicappers but this time of the year in New York is a chance for lesser knowns to establish reputations as bigger names head elsewhere. Fret is a Finger Lakes rider who has just 568 lifetime mounts. He broke his maiden at Albuquerque Downs in 2012.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Todd Pletcher had a win and a place with two starters. His meet numbers are fantastic: 32 15-6-1 (47%/69%). He has an annually talented stable but this is the Championship Meet.
  • Tyler Gaffalione and Paco Lopez each rode three winners.
  • Pick 6 Carryover: More than $807,000 for the next card which is Wednesday.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Brian Hernandez. Jr. rode a natural hat trick.
Santa Anita (California):
  • John Velazquez changed agents from longtime rep Angel Cordero to super-agent Ron Anderson recently. He opted to ride in California for a rare time and the numbers to date at this meet: 27 12-3-5 (44%/74%).
  • Bob Baffert is 21 9-3-4 (43%/76%) this meet.
  • Handle: $12 million.

A reminder than on every January 1, horses turn a year older despite their actual date of birth. As such, all 2-year-olds from 2021, turned three-years-of-age on January 1, 2022 and are eligible for the Kentucky Derby.

The Derby has specific races in which horses accumulate points towards entry into the race. This year and 2023, Bob Baffert has been suspended from all Churchill Downs properties. If his horses win or finish in the top four of those preps, points are not distributed to him and that has already happened. He cannot enter any horse at a Churchill Downs owned property (not only the track in Kentucky but others including Fair Grounds in Louisiana). Owners of those horses will eventually decide if they want to settle for winning such a race -- example the Santa Anita Derby -- and be satisfied with the purse money distributed while Baffert conditions, or they have to decide to put the name in another trainer not affiliated with Baffert.

Gulfstream's card today offers a minimum $1.1 million in the Pick 6 Jackpot.

@MiamiScreamingEagles

A couple of things.

I don’t know if you are familiar with Gulfstream’s layout.
There is very little outdoor seating to watch the races.
For a “major track” to offer such few seating to watch the races is ridiculous.
It is currently being made even worse with demolition of the Tiki hut area.
That area provide a nice comfortable area to bet and watch the races.

From what I understand. They are constructing a night club there.
Just what a race track needs to grow more interest in racing.
Less outdoor seating to watch the races but providing an additional
revenue source for management not associated with racing.
I.E. - Casino

What is your opinion on Fixed Odds betting?

Thanks, Marco

Belmont Stakes further cements NYRA's pact with Fox Sports which has been a boon to not only the big three New York tracks but also to Oaklawn (AR).

Getting the Belmont Stakes card for so many years is a great boost to all involved. NYRA put together a card that can often rival the Breeders' Cup on Belmont Stakes day with the opportunity to see a Triple Crown winner crowned or in absence of that a terrific betting card.

The agreement is for eight years. The June date should offer exclusive coverage to NYRA on Fox since Oaklawn is dark in the summer. Unless of course another entity steps up to join New York.

Mixed feelings. Many serious handicappers get frustrated at the change of odds once the gate opens. A case in point, I had the 10-horse (IIRC), in the Kentucky Derby prep at Oaklawn on Saturday. The horse ran solidly but placed at 7-to-1. That is a serious drop in money had the 10 won and not finished second. That can be tiresome though understandable with international interests coming in via computers or other devices on time but not early enough to display the changes until after the break.

How does it affect pools? I know it is popular in international locales such as Australia. Supposedly New Jersey will become the first entity to offer the option in 2023. Other tracks may copy. New Jersey has a gamble in its wait since the handle was down in 2021 probably due to the lack of a whip and how that can determine handicapping. Maybe NJ gets a bump with the fixed odds especially if that is the lone track in 2022. Newbies and those unaccustomed to pari-mutuel wagering may appreciate the variable. I have no issue with status quo but I also would follow the gimmick to see how it plays out.

Gulfstream tried an odd betting option about five years ago where horses were grouped and the payouts varied. It flopped. If the 2(5 to 1) and 6 (30 to 1) were paired and the 6 won, you bet the pre-race designated payout not the $60+ payout. You get an assigned payout though one that may be more than the $10 if the 2 had won.

Gulfstream is a good track for many interests but it can also be a pain for track people -- from what I have been told -- and we know the casino is as primary moneymaker which is why the Breeders' Cup will probably not be held there by the track ownership's choice.

I’ve been told today that the Tiki hut area will now be a bar/restaurant area.
Still less seating than before in the stretch area.

They have added another seating area comparable to the Tiki hut area
but it’s located at the first turn. Quite a ways past the finish line.
I guess it’s better than nothing.

As far as the fixed odd betting. I hope in the future it becomes available
country wide. I would like the option.

Nothing more frustration than the rebate syndicates pounding
down the odds on a horse at the last minute. Happens too often for my liking.

The one saving grace is that at the mid-level track. Where the pools
are smaller the syndicates aren’t involved. At least not yet.

I remember the betting at Gulfstream you mentioned.
Simply silly stuff for a weekend person or family to enjoy.
They never really promoted it. So what was the point.
The tellers hated it.

And it crowded a screen that was already loaded with options. The track chose to do something different if not creative. It should have been limited to certain days like Florida Derby or Kentucky Derby with expanded crowds. Maybe pick one race a day at the most. It was gimmicky and fell the way of New Coke.

  • It was a good day for former conditioners from Suffolk Downs (MA).
Parx Racing (Pennsylvania):
  • Race 1: Gamestonks (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) was splendid at 5-to-2 for the Maryland connections dominating by more than 11 lengths. Russell is a "ROCK STAR" in the making and is 27% lifetime. Watch this pleasurable kick:

Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • Race 2: Killargue's Girl (Wesley Henry/Luis Dominguez) was the lone first-time starter and won at 19-to-1. That angle wins often with prices.
  • Race 3: Auburn (Richard Mitchell/Pernel Bagwandeen) won at 6-to-1. The Jamaican jockey is 50 years of age. The trainer has been conditioning since 2007 and won for the 14th time. He was 0-for-71 last year.
  • Race 5: Glovanna (Jorge Urnaneta/M.C. Reardon) paid $122 in victory. The trainer was formerly based at Suffolk Downs (MA) and doesn't have the stock but she won here. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $49,000.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 6: Panotti (Jesus Rios/Jennifer Young) gave the trainer her 10th lifetime win. She won her first six races at Suffolk Downs (MA) in 2012 and then closed shop until winning three times last year.
  • Rainbow Six Carryover: $860,000+

  • Canceled: Due to impending snow in the area.
Sam Houston (Texas):
  • Record Handle for Opening Day: $3.2 million.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Canceled: Snow.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Canceled: Snow.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Race 3: John Jude rode the winner in Tampa Bay's third race. He rode much of last year at Arapahoe in Colorado and less than two years ago had a couple of mounts at the Gillespie Fairgrounds in Texas. He has ridden at Tampa here and there.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Pick 6: The Rainbow 6 sequence was nailed for over $1.2 million. The sequence was 3-3-8-7-5-3. There was over $348,000 added to the pool.
  • Race 10: Canelo (Corey Lanerie/J. Kent Sweezey) lit up the tote board at 32-to-1 to finish the racing day. The $.50 Pick5 paid over $88,000. But the story was in the Rainbow Six which was hit at more than $1.2 million. Lanerie won the 8th race at 14-to-1. Someone better be sending Lanerie a thank you note.
  • Race 8: Shea on a Mission (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Carlos David) was scratched at the gate which led the jockey to be removed from his remaining mounts due to a knee injury. Ortiz has won the last three Eclipse Awards for Outstanding Jockey of the Year in North America and returned Thursday from a 30-day suspension resulting from a race in New York. He has four wins in his two days since resuming his racing. The severity of the injury was diminished so perhaps he returns to ride today but perhaps he could be off mounts, too.
  • Handle: Over $11 million.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $5.5 million.
  • Race 7: Wings of an Angel (Luis Quinonez/Larry Jones) won as a first-time starter at 7-to-1 and Church Service (Kelsi Harr/Robert Cline) placed at 20-to-1. The result was special as Jones, getting up there in age and whose body has shown the effects of a horseman riding for a longtime, basically discovered Harr who is now engaged to Cline, the latter who has praised Jones. He will also always be known as the ladies man.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 8: Adare Manor (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) obliterated the field as she broke her maiden in her third try. She was purchased for $375,000 last year.

Laurel (MD) has canceled racing for the entire weekend. I find this note particularly interesting in that the Maryland Jockey Club will seek outside assistance pertaining to track conditions:

In addition, on Monday, Jan. 10, MJC has arranged a consultation with track experts Glen Kozak from NYRA and Jamie Richardson of Churchill Downs, who will be on-site to evaluate track conditions. Entry day for Friday, Jan. 14, will move from Sunday, Jan. 9 to Tuesday, Jan. 11.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: Just under $10 million.
  • Dylan Davis rode three winners.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Pablo Morales rode five winners for the second straight Saturday at Tampa.
  • Race 1: High Stock (William Humphrey/Graham Motion) had a 2-to-1 morning and was cold on the board. Perhaps an unfamiliar rider was the cause. He is still a teenager and was recently brought to the U.S. from England and this was his lone mount of the day. Unfortunately, the inexperience showed. The horse has ability but was caught in trouble and traffic. Motion must see something in the jockey to have him ride. Here's to better days.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $15.3 million.
  • Luis Saez rode a natural hat trick in a 3-win day.
  • Ch-ch-ch-changes: Many rider changes and shifts today due to the absences of Tyler Gaffalione and Irad Ortiz, Jr., the latter who will be off his mounts Sunday (knee). Two top year-round local riders -- Edgard Zayas and Miguel Vasquez also did not ride. Zayas has a noted absence due to injury.
  • Race 9: The $1 exacta was $713.50. Keep that figure in mind because that could be the high for a $1 exacta for days if not weeks to come.
  • Race 11: For the second straight day, massive pouts in the finale of each card for Pick 5 and Pick 6 bettors. The $.20 Pick 6 was nailed for $100,000+. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $56,000.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Early Double: $1000 double to start the day after a DQ in the opener. Someone is happy.
  • Speed: It was a muddy, sloppy track and even fog hindered viewing early but one constant was that speed kills. Closers were buried.
  • Race 8: Coach (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) won the $150,000 Pippin Stakes. The 4-year old is 5-for-10 lifetime but she is 3-for-4 on a wet track. She seemed playful in the mud before and even afterwards.

  • Race 2: Capture the Glory (Francisco Arrieta/Lindsay Schultz) gave the trainer her first lifetime win.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Around $12 million.
  • Race 8: Under the Stars (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Santa Ynez Stakes. The 3-year-old daughter to Pioneer of the Nile was challenged but never surrendered. Good filly.

The winner of the $1.2 million Pick 6 at Gulfstream on Friday showed his winning hand. He invested $1,080. He is from Kentucky and has a Twinspires account.

It looks like he used the "all" button in the fourth leg.

I hope he sent Corey Lanerie, aka Mr. Kentucky, a thank you note.

Check out the Paulick report to read the winners firsthand account
on his pick 6 hit.
Absolutely unbelievable.
