Naylor from *** weighs in

With all sides entrenched in their positions, with the front having gone quiet but for the occasional antagonistic press release from the Goldwater bunch (no, they are not going away), it's reasonable to ask whether the NHL is merely waiting for the Coyotes season to play out before it pulls the plug.

That's a reasonable possibility, given that the deal to finance the purchase was supposed to close more than a month ago, given that there has been no softening of positions, and given that the NHL owns the Coyotes and therefore wouldn't want the embarrassing and costly spectacle of an empty arena for the playoffs. But unless the proposed municipal bond sale can somehow close, someone is going to have to spend a pot of money to keep the Coyotes in Glendale for another season.

And it's not at all clear who might have the appetite for that.

Glendale will only replace 10m to the Enterprise Fund that the 25m pledge to cover losses came from

http://www.azcentral.com/community/...dale-utilities-fund-phoenix-coyotes-deal.html

City officials expect to get the $25 million back once it finalizes a deal with potential Coyotes buyer Matt Hulsizer.

However, the city plans to put $5 million of that into the general fund to cover operating costs. Another $10 million must go into a fund as part of the Coyotes deal. The plan right now is for the remaining $10 million to go back into the enterprise fund, city spokeswoman Julie Frisoni said.

There's nothing that says that money from enterprise funds can't be transferred to the general fund or vice versa, said Tom Belshe, deputy director at League of Arizona Cities and Towns.

"Although I don't think it's widespread practice," he added.

so if Matt closes he's immediately giving COG 25m of which 15m will go into fund to cover operating costs etc....

Another PBJ article

Coyotes playoff run could determine future in Phoenix

http://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/blog/business/2011/04/coyotes-playoff-run-could-determine.html

When I saw the headline I was thinking this was talk like last year, where people were saying a good playoff run would entice someone to buy the team. Well, we know how that has worked out.

The article is basically saying that the farther the Coyotes go in the playoffs, the more time it gives everyone to make a deal. If Sunnucks is right, then this could mean an announcement as soon as they are out, or the clock finally starts ticking for real.

The Toronto radio station also said the NHL was looking at buying some of the bonds the city of Glendale is trying to sell to keep the team in Arizona.

http://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/news/2011/04/13/nhl-denies-coyotes-to-winnipeg-report.html

Just one more example how the NHL is willing to do more to keep a certain team in a certain market, than what they did to keep Quebec and Winnipeg in thiers. :(

At this point why doesn't the NHL just keep owning the team forever? It would cut down on all the paper work and transfering of money.

Sorry, I forgot that having a professional sports league own a team in the same said league looks bad and speaks volumes about conflict-of-interest. Silly me!

McCain calls for mediation and talks to keep Coyotes

Sen. John McCain says it's going to be "extremely difficult" to keep the Coyotes in the Valley unless the Goldwater Institute resolves its opposition to Glendale's deal which would have the NHL team bought by Chicago businessman Matthew Hulsizer.

"Right now, unless something changes, I'm very concerned," the Republican senator said Wednesday on the Doug & Wolf Show on Sports 620 KTAR.

Well, it doesn't look good. Mediation, for this case? No way. It's either legal or illegal. Can't go half-way

McCain said he has talked to Gov. Jan Brewer and she has indicated she would be willing to help resolve the disputed issues between the Goldwater Institute and Glendale.

"It would be helpful, I think, if you had some kind of mediator in the room," he said, saying that former Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colangelo "springs to mind."

"All we're asking for is for the Goldwater Institute to at least agree to sit down across the table with them (Glendale and Hulsizer) and see if there's some common ground," McCain said.

Look's like TNSE might be used again, but this time it will cost the NHL.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/br...nets-Coyotes-to-Winnipeg-story-119782404.html

Playing stalking horse for the NHL a second time will, however, come with some strings says a U.S.-based attorney with experience in sports franchise transfer-of-ownership deals.

The lawyer, who has been involved in NBA and NHL relocations deals, demanded anonymity but said the next few steps will be common practice in terms of the league’s arrangement with True North.

According to the source, True North will require financial and contractual guarantees to sign a purchase offer that Bettman can then take to Arizona and use to prod Glendale and Hulsizer.

Before True North signs a deal, they’ll want exclusivity, a firm timeline, board of governor approval and likely a seven-figure compensation — called a breakup fee — should the deal sour at the last moment.

True North will insist Bettman only shop their deal to Hulsizer and that no other party be allowed in at the last minute. The NHL will have the opportunity to use this leverage with Hulsizer alone. If he can’t or won’t buy the team — then it’s Winnipeg’s.

I don't want to pile on, and I don't think this was posted earlier but Gretzky, the man who is owned billions, er, i mean millions doesn't think that the deal will go through and with it relocation.

Wayne Gretzky, who was a former managing partner and coach with the Coyotes before the NHL took it over, agreed that the Coyotes situation in Glendale is dire.

"As time goes on here, it looks less and less like (the team staying is) going to happen," Gretzky said on the Fan 590 Wednesday. "Maybe a great playoff run might change a lot of opinions and thoughts of a lot of people … so if they have a good run maybe a lot of things could change, but it doesn't look good right now."

Sanders:

Everyone involved in the ownership negotiations gushes about the team, but no one assures the Coyotes will stay.

"I can't say enough about the focus and commitment of the players on this team, as well as its coaching staff and front-office personnel," Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. "I'm sure the fans are frustrated, as we all are, with the ownership uncertainty, and with the inability to this point to close a transaction."

But Daly on Friday said he's committed to closing the deal in Glendale. At least "until it becomes clear to us that those efforts are futile or until we have no choice other than to move on."

He said,"At this point, I can't say when that will be."

City Manager Ed Beasley said the city is doing the best it can.

"There isn't a day that goes by where the parties are not looking to make the deal better," he said.

Hulsizer's group is ready for a resolution.

"It's curious why there are factors at play preventing the deal from getting done," Hulsizer representative Brad Goldberg said.

Glendale, Goldwater Institute to meet - Agrees any talks to be held in public forum

More info:

The City of Glendale has asked the Goldwater Institute for a meeting and has agreed to meet the think-tank's demand that any talks be held in a public forum.

Goldwater told the Free Press late Tuesday afternoon a meeting time had not been set but talks were ongoing and details could be finalized in time for a meeting to be held Thursday.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Glendale-Goldwater-Institute-to-meet-120243909.html

Scruggs went on television the other day saying they wouldn't meet publicly. Should be fun.
