Phoenix (AP) - The Phoenix Coyotes have successfully completed their first quarter of the season under new General Manager Ryan Yessie with a 7-12-1 record good for 12th in the conference and 6 pts out of a playoff spot.. impressive for a first year GM expected to spend the entire year in the basement, top performers this year would include Marc-Andre Bergeron who leads the team in scoring dispite being a defenceman, along with Ben Clymer, and Craig Conroy; Conroy, who's goalscoring has been quiet this year has 9 assists in his first 13 games with the team. After that everyone has been contributing on the team fairly evenly, which has been what has brought Phoenix it's so called success so far this year. "We've been matching up the lines very good so far, we've found a way to get production out of our 3rd and 4th lines which has helped us win a few games." Unlikely hero's such as Derian Hatcher and Trevor Letowski have come up with some big late game goals that have turned out to be game winners.

"We have said all along our goal is to make the playoffs in 2008-2009 and go from there, every move that has been made so far has had some reasoning behind it in accordance to the 2008-2009 season, so that will continue to be our focus as the talk of names like Conroy, Hatcher, etc. start to come up." Mike Dunham also can not be left off this quarter report as he has played suprisingly well for Phoenix so far this year. He certianly won't own the lowest GAA or SV% but he is coming up with some intresting, and big wins against some good teams.

Phoenix is 4-6 in their last 10 games, including a 2 game winning streak. Phoenix's wins this year include victories over the top 2 teams in the HFNHL the Anaheim Ducks and the Toronto Maple Leafs, ontop of that the other 3 wins have come against other playoff ranked teams, so as the season moves on Phoenix may get the chance to play as the spoiler. "The thought of knowing that one more addition to the line-up could make us a playoff contender this year at the 7th or 8th capacity is very tempting that is for sure, but we will continue to set our course to get younger rather than stronger, and build towards the future, becasue just making the playoffs shouldn't satisfy this franchise."
