All umps are bad. They are all terrible and all egotistical.

90% think everybody is there to see them.

I pretty much get in a fight with refs for my sons soccer games and he's 11. They're terrible from top to bottom.

I mean...this is exactly why no one wants to ref. I did it for baseball and soccer for a couple years during high school and decided I had enough due to the constant abuse from coaches and parents. Not saying I was the best and never made a mistake, but it seemed like it was literally every single call.

I really wouldn’t want anything involved with youth sports these days. People are too crazy. I’m not saying don’t be competitive but have some filter.

Be f***ing better, if I'm half paying attention because I'm trying to coach an area and I can see this shit, these guys clearly aren't doing a good job.

BTW, I should clarify, I'm not out there trying to throw down with the guys, but I do speak up on missed calls, you can't let it slide, he needs to know they missed it so they don't miss it again.

The kids are starting to get aggressive at this age, they are elbowing and kneeing and pushing. If he's not watching, somebody could get seriously hurt.

I didn’t mind umps that were bad but consistent. If you aren’t giving me the corners, that’s fine. But when I plant a 12-6 deuce down the middle you best call it.

I really miss playing.

When I would ref hockey I would hate doing teenager games. The best were the real young kids or the lower tier beer leaguers. The overall vibe from everybody would not be like it’s game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals.

I love the people who complain about refs - especially in a youth soccer game. Try doing it once in a while, and tell me you need to 'be better'. There is so much you have to process and you are given absolutely zero time to do it - especially if your township is one of those who gives an unlucky parent on the sideline the offside flag, like mine used to.

Soccer, unlike any sport, is such a game of viewing angles, that its incredibly easy to miss a call based on being in one spot or the other. Take the goal against Real Madrid in the CL last week, where the ball clearly crossed the line on one angle, but on the other, appeared to never go out. Stuff like this happens all too often, and you dont get the luxury of replays.

Nevermind that you are making poor money to be verbally abused by people who, by and large, dont even understand the games rules.

Haha, might want to ease up a bit. I wouldn’t argue in front of kids unless the ref were being discriminating or dangerous by not properly controlling physical play.

It’s not important to win at that level. Better to learn team skills and understand that losing is inevitable.

Also, as mentioned, youth sports refs are either volunteers or low paid part timers. Try to volunteer as a ref for your kids games. I think you’ll become more sympathetic to the poor saps you argue with.

Parents like @Hiesenberg are absolutely a huge reason why no one wants to ref

I did the same exact thing
and my goodness you nailed it with making little money to deal with people who don't understand the rules
had a kids game where the sweeper was basically standing with the goalie most of the game and a collection of parents were screaming for OFFSIDES! everytime the other team advanced the ball. You can only take so much ignorant stupidity...

It's 11 year old soccer. Your expectations are set way too high. Plus who gives a f*** if they miss a call, it's 11 year old soccer.

Yup, it stopped being worth it. I did it as a fun way to stay in touch with the game, because I loved being a part of it. The idea that i might be 'egotistical' because i want to continue to be a part of the game is utter nonsense. I'm far from perfect and i'm sure i blew a few calls. Some of them may have even decided games indirectly, and thats something that weighs on you.

The flip side of that is, your kids wouldnt even be playing the game if not for people like me who spend my own personal time learning the rules of the game so that I can officiate it, and then practically volunteer my time to referee the game for your kids. Ease the hell up, and use it as a teaching lesson that sometimes, life just doesnt always work the way its supposed to. I dont know what to tell you.

Let's be honest here. 95% of refs are fine but there are some that get off to the power trip that somehow they think comes with it. Those people should not be reffing and they deserve to get ripped into.

-Signed a middle school basketball coach

Agreed. Some people do it for the wrong reasons, but to insinuate that 90% are their to stroke their own egos over an 11 year olds soccer game is a whole extra level of crazy.

As I said clearly, this is when I speak up, when players are being injured and nothing is being called. Bad calls happen, I'll bring it to their attention and we move on. But when I have players coming back to the bench bleeding because they are being spiked on purpose, we have to say something.

You don't know me, the kids I coach, or the league we play in. Kindly take your opinion elsewhere.
you, you team & your league are not very different from any other kiddies soccer league
in yr own words you said you pretty much get into fights with the refs
for shame, Dave Hakstol would be a better coach than you
