Why are the Penguins interested in moving phil?

92 points last year, over ppg this year, making 6.8. Seems like the type of offensive guy you keep around. Granted, im purely stat watching.

A mix of the following 4

1) Panic over the prospect of missing the playoffs and being willing to explore any route that takes us away from that - its unlikely a Kessel trade does that, but maybe it would
2) Being an awkward fit 5v5 that hasn't hit his potential and complicates our lines
3) Potential fallout from clashes between him and Sully
4) Preferring not to be holding so many high value contracts for 30+ players

That said, while there's interest in moving him for the right deal, he's not going to be moved for the sake of it and the likelihood of finding the right deal is pretty minute. Particularly here - the likely bidder for Kessel is a SC contender with surplus in certain areas that really needs just one more elite gamebreaker.

LOL WUT. What do top 4 defensemen usually go for?

Maatta isn't bad. His coach has been ******ed how he's used players. Sprong on the 4th line. Rust on the 1st line. Asking Maatta, Johnson, and Oleksiak to aggressively jump into plays which when they get burned they look bad.

Maatta is a high IQ player, playing for a low IQ coach.

Maatta is at his best when aggressively jumping into plays though. Maatta's problem isn't usage, it's that he's been playing like crap and not moving the puck quickly enough.

imo he has been bad for a long time. I know its unfortunate due to the cancer and injuries, but he just isn't that good.

Its amazing how such a bad player so consistently has numbers suggesting that they're helping the team a lot.

I agree those would be the teams reasons for doing so (except #2) but I think that just shows why it would be a massive mistake to move Kessel. Those are weak reasons to entertain trading a top tier player.

If you move an elite scorer like Phil it’s because you think the return would be through the roof and improve the team. That should be the lone reasoning behind the interest.

I disagree completely about Maatta. Maatta playing aggressive and jumping into plays especially in the offensive and neutral zone is what leads him to get burned and look like a flat footed turnstile on the ice leading to odd man breaks.

Maatta in his own zone is solid. He is a stud positional defenseman. The moment you get him being aggressive to jump into plays to keep pucks in is when he looks terrible. He’s just not that kind of player for the strategy Sully likes to employ.

The only problem with Maatta is his weak skating, which can be an issue sometimes. Other than that, he's a pretty solid D-man.

Why would kessel want to go to a non playoff team. And why would Chicago want his contract when they already have so much cap issues with terrible contracts like toews and seabrook.

Not a chance he goes to Chicago.

A. Shaw contract (LTIR) A. Nylander & a fourth round pick.

Option 2:

Lol yeah go for it.

But really, I don't see how he helps them at all. Also the Hawks cannot afford to give any more picks away and somehow over the past month went from a great cap position to a not-so-great one.

what do you mean they have a team set this year and next and then 2 years have TONS of cap space? They also have 3 3rds next year and 2 2nds the year after.
