The Pens would need to get an offer that would "thrill" them enough to move Kessel. He's a player who could decline at any point during the remainder of his contract. Most teams won't pay a premium unless they think a 31-year old Kessel would put them over the top. I don't think anyone would argue that the Hawks shouldn't be trading for him.

Any player could decline at any moment. But Phil just had the best season of his career and is on pace for one less point than last season.

Not necessarily disagreeing with you, just adding context.

There's some....er, questionable things being said by Hawks fans on page 1

The Penguins aren't trading Kessel for a deal based around a 35 year old Keith, even though Keith is basically exactly what they need. Chicago doesn't have the pieces to get Kessel, the Penguins need a 2nd pair puck moving RD and a replacement RWer if they trade Kessel. Chicago doesn't have either of those as expendable assets.

So let me get this right. The Penguins problem is they are not spending enough on defense?

No, they're problem is that most of what they spent is for crap

(and I'm a Pens fan acknowledging this, so it's not some random fan of another team trolling)

Wow that Matta contract is bad..

LOL WUT. What do top 4 defensemen usually go for?

Maatta isn't bad. His coach has been Pejorative Slured how he's used players. Sprong on the 4th line. Rust on the 1st line. Asking Maatta, Johnson, and Oleksiak to aggressively jump into plays which when they get burned they look bad.

Maatta is a high IQ player, playing for a low IQ coach.

I see Maatta as a fringe 4D but a good 5D. He's always seemed sluggish to me and I'd want him at lower than his cap hit personally.

Why are the Penguins interested in moving phil?

92 points last year, over ppg this year, making 6.8. Seems like the type of offensive guy you keep around. Granted, im purely stat watching.

Yeah... my guess is that the base of the ask is

Saad + Boquvist +?

That base doesn’t do anything, at the moment, for Pittsburgh, but I think it’s fair.

What a joke. I like The Thrill, but the Hawks have no business trading away Boqvist in a deal for Kessel.

I don't really see how this would help the Hawks either.

I'd drive Phil in a stretch limo with a built in hot dog stand if Keith becomes a Pen.

I’d listen to Saad+ but I’d want the + to be something very major and an overpay. And then Hawks fans would say no.

Phil is insanely good. I think he’ll age very well too. Will never get the respect he deserves but he’s one of the best offensive players in the league. It would be a colossal mistake to trade him with barring an massive overpayment.

So Kane and Gustafson for Kessel and Pearson, Jarry and a 1st
