On TSN's ranking of the Top 50 NHL players Kessel ranked 43rd which is an improvement from ranking 47th in the previous one. However I was surprised that he didn't rank among the top 30 or even 20 based on his play from the past few seasons and they have Taylor Hall out ranking him at 39th. So what are your opinions or does something like this even matter?

43 is a bit low for Phil. ~30 would have been more reasonable in my opinion.

doesn't matter. They're obligated to publish these every year, and they're all completely subjective. As long as Phil plays like Phil I'll be happy.

Horrible...He's been one of the best in the league for 2 years in a row. NO respect for Kessel at all.

Seems fair in the eyes of the GMs and Coaches that voted for this. They know more about hockey talent than a majority of us on this board (if not all).

    heh.

After they embarassingly ranked him 47th last year after being 6th in league scoring, he goes out and finishes in 7th this year, and follows with a good playoff performance.....and they still rank him 43rd.

4th highest scorer in hockey the past 2yrs, 1 of only 2 players to finish top-10 in the both the last two seasons.....and he's 43rd.

    embarassing leafs hate.

They have Parise ranked at 23 but he isn't better than Kessel now.

How can James Neal be ranked ahead of Kessel, I would like to see him try and carry a team offensively without a guy like Malkin feeding him. I know offense isn't everything but Neal is no defensive stalwart either.

The ranking appears to consider a players entire career rather than current worth. For example the Sedins, Datsyuk, St. Louis have obviously all had great careers but I wouldn't trade Kessel for any of them today.

It's not Leafs hate. I don't like throwing that term around because then people assume we have persecution complexes or something. What it is an under-appreciation of what Kessel brings, and the fact that everyone's pigeonholed him as a one-dimensional, lazy sniper.

Like you said, he's one of the best scorers in the game. He's added a lethal playmaking side to his game, and he's at least passable on the backcheck. But that's not the narrative, so I doubt anyone but us, the guys who watch him every night, will ever acknowledge that. Phil's never going to be ranked higher by TSN because they've already made up their mind about what kind of player he is.

I know there's more to hockey than offense but Kessel being 43rd is laughable. He's definitely top 30, probably top 20

The funny thing about that is right after they were done with the players from 50-41 they said a reason Kessel ranked where he did is because he is a winger, because those who play centre and defense have more responsibility. Then they go rank Neal who is another winger in the top 30, so that made me shake my head at that decision.

apparently it wasn;t TSN but GMs and coaches who ranked this list, but looking at it I find that hard to believe

It could have been 2 coaches and 1 gm for all we know LOL I don't even care... we know how big of an impact a player like Kessel makes and we don't need a list to verify that.

you just talked about half the game and nothing about the other half why? that's probably why Phil is as low as he is, because offense is all he's pretty much does at this point, he's average at best Defensively and doesn't impact the game at all in the physical aspect either. it's similar to why Martin St. Louis who lead the league in scoring last year is still 26th on this list.

IMO, but Krejci below Lucic is another puzzling ranking.

Based on that what did Taylor Hall due to go from 50th to 39th passing Kessel.

Stamkos doesn't have a defensive game either. He's way too highly ranked.
