Anyone that actually watches these players knows that Martel goes hard to the net and gets a lot of goals from that area of the ice. Acting like he scores goals that only work in the AHL and imply his scoring wouldn't translate because he's a perimeter player is dead wrong and has never watched.

Nhl is different though. He'd have a tough time scoring at the big level like many others his size and we have to many figure skaters on our team now. Cut 1 add 1.

Martel is a NHL type player because he is crafty, smart and determined. Super high energy level. And his "infectiousness" rubs off on his teammates. His hockey IQ is very high. He knows were to go and mostly not go. Now whether he gets killed in the no fly zones in the NHL is another matter, however, he does go up against some really big dudes who are defensemen who are going to make it to the NHL. He does not take crap from anyone. You out to see Morin shake is head when Martel tries to muck it up......;-)

Weal had to get a lot stronger to handle the NHL, and Martel is significantly smaller than Weal. It will be hard for him to play in traffic. Two or three years ago Martel would have probably already been called up, but now it's going to be tough to find a spot, which is why an injury to Weal or Konency is his best shot to get a cameo and prove he belongs. If Leier gets hurt they'd be more likely to bring up NAK or MV and put Raffl at LW, or bring up Vorobyev and put Laughton at LW.

Sure he's more talented than Lehtera, Weise or Read right now, but what line do you put him on?
Martel - Patrick -Konency? That's asking a lot of Patrick.
Martel - Filppula - Simmonds, at least teams won't mess with him too much, but then you have Weal with Patrick and Konecny.
Either way we'd have an undersized middle two lines without the great speed to compensate.

This is why Lindblom will get called up instead of Martel, once he's ready you could play him anywhere in the top 9, and even on the checking line.

Martel might be a better fit next year when Patrick is a year older (and stronger) and Vorobyev replaces Filppula (who isn't very physical). It's just a matter of finding balance on the #2 and #3 lines.

Nope. With all the times this year that I have seen both Lindblom and Martel: Still take Martel.
Martel acts. Lindblom reacts. Why? He is much slower than Martel. Martel is greased lightning.
Martel is a smart ass with an attitude.....even when he does not have Myers or Morin to back him up.
He will glove f**k anyone's face. Lindblom is kind of milktoast in that regard. He will learn though.

If that was true than why is he not roadkill now? He goes up against some pretty big defenseman in front of the net as it is. And playing 3 games in a row against big dudes he still out guns most of them. Does he get knocked down...sure.....does he get back up absolutely. I think he would love to prove you wrong.

I've been a Martel fan since he's been a Phantom and have voted him above consensus in our rankings. I was messing around at deadhead calling him "road kill" the other day.

He won't be roadkill but he'll struggle with puck possession.
We saw that with Weal two years ago v last year v this year.
Weal got stronger and better able to handle the contact.
Martel isn't going to get much bigger or stronger.

Doesn't mean he can't play, but it does mean you have to put him in the right situation.
Checking line - forget it, he would be roadkill on the forecheck.
Speed line - we don't have the guys right now, Konency and who's the center (or LW)?

He's just a hard fit on this team, this year.
Now say if you had Rubtsov at center, and Ratcliffe at RW, he might be perfect as their LW.

So, Martel = Keller?
Keller was the #7 pick, as an 18 year old college player, 31g 21-24 45.
He's far more skilled and accomplished than Martel at the same age.
He's undersized but still has 2" on Martel, and is 168-170 where Martel was 162 lbs at 18 years old.

What this shows is simply that undersized players have to be uber-talented to make it.

I don't think it's any coincidence that "size" rhymes with "sighs"

How talented do you have to be to score 14 goals in 14 AHL games at age 22?

He looks so weak I bet one of those college girls who won the volleyball tournament could beat him up.
