Alec Regula will always be the one who got away for me in that 2018 draft. He would’ve been a perfect complimentary piece on the back-end.

Given the Flyers paucity of RHDs, it is surprising, though he was generally considered to be in the 60-80 range before the draft, Button had him at #77.

The general consensus before the draft had Ginning ahead of Regula by 10-20 slots, so it was the "safe" move.
Of course, we don't know if they wanted to move down and couldn't (next pick was 4th rd).

Of course, we could have taken Calen Addison #53 (5'10 181), Kevin Bahl #55 (6'7 240) or Axel Anderson #57.
Addison looks like Ghost-lite.

Consensus draft rankings mean very little IMO. Regula's passing ability was better (still is), defensive play was better (still is), and he was (still is) a superior processor over Ginning.

Ultimately, it's water under the bridge. I'm just a fan of Regula with his potential as a genuinely good defense-first NHL defenseman.

- Bahl is a poor man's Regula
- Addison's a pretty meh player. Never really stood out as anything more than a 3rd pair PP specialist in my viewings. Those players are valuable but I've never really been particularly impressed by his defensive play (gaps, stickwork, DZ reads, ability to come away with the puck in 50/50 situations, etc.)
- Andersson's JAG

Technically next August.

HOWEVER, because of the age he was when drafted he can simply declare he is leaving the NCAA this summer and sign with anyone as a UFA.

You have to wonder if someone got in his ear and said "Leave school and get to UFA, we'll sign you." There are a whole lot of teams desperate for D-men.

Kalynuk isn't Fox, he's not going to be a hot commodity, someone would sign him b/c he's "free," but unless he's looking for a bad team where he might make the NHL roster, he's got little reason to go elsewhere. However, facing Zamula, York and Millman, and the NHL roster full unless they trade Ghost after this season and let Braun and Hagg walk (still have 4 NHL D-men plus Friedman and Hogberg), he might just decide the competition is too much. In which case "bye."

I'm not sure I'd put him ahead of Millman at this point as a prospect, Millman doesn't turn 19 until July, Kalynuk turned 23 in April.

From what I know it is not decided either way.

Flyers have an exclusive 30 day window where no-one else can talk with him right now (starting the day he decided to forego his senior year).

There is a chance he and his agent could simply be waiting to see if the NHL decide players can be signed and play in 2020-21 to burn a year off the deal...
