It’s not like he’s Dave Brown who earned a lifetime paycheque for caving in Tomas Sandstrom’s head or something.

Manderville as VP? Fits, since he probably had to do a lot of dirty things for the right people to stay in the lineup with those goal droughts he had.

Kind of reeks of Hextall. You have to be in game shape but arguably the greatest goal scorer of the NHL has a terrible diet.

Sandstorm signs? Well alrighty then. Guess he is keeping that NHL dream alive a little longer. Glad I didn't bash him for going back to Europe. Either way he just needs to play a lot so I hope he can do that here. Phantoms are going to be chock full of goalies.

Babe Ruth had a terrible diet.
Great players can get away with it in their 20s, but it'll catch up to them.
For most players, failing to get and stay in top condition is the route to an early career change.

It's so hard to figure out the machinations. Was Sandstrom frustrated and signed in Finland to force the Flyers' hand? Did they just sign him for Expansion Draft compliance? Will he end up in Finland on loan, if he can't get playing time over Usti and Ersson with the Phantoms? Will they sign a vet NHL backup to Hart, AND an AHL vet, just to screw things up?

Stay tuned, the Flyers' Goalie Saga is a neverending story....

I think I saw it on Charlie’s Twitter feed but Sandstrom apparently agreed to that deal a while ago when it wasn’t looking like he was going to have a future here. It seems his play later in the year the Flyers reconsidered him in their plans.

His NHL contact probably has a European assignment clause to it. So there’s probably wiggle room for both parties to see how things go for next year.

This seems like not enough drama for me. Can we add some plot twists? ;)

They did need an ED-eligible goaltender, as Lyon is also a UFA. So Sandstrom / Ustimenko on the Phantoms and Ersson in the SHL? Or will Laperriere determine rankings with a push-up contest?

Sandstrom still would have been eligible for the ED just by qualifying him.

Apparently the rule of thumb is:

    1. Block shot with face: lifetime employment
    2. Block shot with scrotum: go home to Norway

How is Lappy supposed to understand what AV is trying to do when AV doesn't even understand what he's trying to do.......

Check out the words of wisdom. We are doomed, he has less of a clue than AV, if that's possible.

Lappy isn't going to be developing top skill players because they won't be spending a lot of time with the Phantoms, TK, Farabee, etc.
Same with college players like Allison and Laczynski.
The top guys go to the AHL to acclimate to pro/NA hockey, then quickly dominate with talent and get called up.

The players who spend a year or two or more in the AHL tend to be the intermediate talents, either kids out of the CHL who need work on their fundamentals, especially defensemen, or second tier guys who need a couple years to sharpen both their skill set and their fundamentals. It gives them time to physically and emotionally mature and learn how to work within their limitations. And they're primarily bottom six/third pair guys unless they take a big step up.

Given how Bunnaman and Twarynski developed under Gordon, or Friedman, or NAK taking three seasons to put it together, or Vorobyev never learning how to play a complete game, maybe Lappy might be better at this aspect of development than Gordon.

I loved the 'I thought about head coaching 3 or 4 years ago, but when I saw the opening in Lehigh Valley, I called Chuck and met with him and told him was I could do.' That Chuck didn't find someone remotely qualified for the job is terribly lazy.

As always, I hope he's the best coach in AHL history, develops every one of our prospects into top 6 players, and then takes over the Flyers and wins the Cup. Good luck, Coach Lappy, make 'em do some laps and push ups!

I'll just be happy if he can push the next NAK to be a player who doesn't go MIA for long stretches.

Though to be honest, I think it's more on the scouting group to research player intangibles and find those with high motors and work ethic who don't need to be pushed toward excellence.
