Bollands out for another few months, so Holland should have an NHL roster spot for that whole timeframe unless he completely craps the bed.

After that, assuming everyones healthy, maybe they trade pending UFA Kulemin or Raymond, then shuffle Bolland to the wing (which he can also play).

We will see how Holland looks, he has a 25 game tryout, Trevor Smith looks ahead of him now. The best set of games will be the determining factor. He has potential to be a #3 if he can earn RC's trust defensively. Let's hope he can. Not a spectacular player by any means, but has decent skill and does seem to finish his checks. Hard to judge a game against lowly Buffalo though.

From what I know he is not really a 3rd line guy. He is not even suited for this at all, he will be miscast and let go if that's the case.

Considering he's only 22, playing for his hometown team, was probably super nervous, playing on the top line, had no practice time and probably barely had time to say hello to his new teammates and being thrust into a critical time for the Leafs (losing 3 in a row), he did a terrific job. He didn't make many mistakes and helped on the forecheck and didn't cause any turnovers or look out of place.

Was it a perfect debut? Nope. But with this fanbase it seems the perfect debut for a new player has to be a hat trick or a fight.

Someone would have given him some advice on his tweeter about fight or hat-trick situation. lol

I was there last night. I thought he looked pretty good actually. Not very physical considering he's pretty big. But I thought he looked good with Kessel and JVR when he was out there. If I had the day he had I'd be out of my mind by game time lol but if he was overwhelmed it definitely didn't show. I look forward to watching him play more.

Kassian vs Holland trade

So i was wondering, there are 2 very good prospects, from the same draft year and 2 spots apart, one gets traded for Cody Hodgson, (big trade) whereas Holland gets traded for a lot less. Is it because Holland is less of a prospect or does he have a less potential? or could it be that Nonis is better in making trades than Gillis? Zack Kassian trade at the time of the trade i thought was an over payment from nucks point but i believe it more now.

JVR - Kadri - Kessel
Clarkson - Bozak - Kulemin
Raymond - Holland - Lupul
McClement - Smithson - Ashton (Orr - McLaren against tough opponents)

I think that's the best possible lineup we can go with when Kadri and Bozak are back. Like last year, we can transition Holland in with soft minutes and giving him Raymond and Lupul would really help him along offensively.

Top line is our scoring line. 2nd line can be used as a shutdown line but if we give them enough minutes, Kulemin and Clarkson are arguably 2 of our best players against the boards. Bozak is the key to that line but he's usually done well when he's away from Kessel. 3rd line as said, could be our sheltered scoring line #3. 4th line is our shutdown/ grinder line. We have our PK specialists on the 4th line.

This is a pretty well balanced lineup in my mind. What do you guys think?

where you were drafted means very little 4 years after the draft. Kassian had developed more at the time he was traded and still has. Holland hasn't proven himself as a permanant NHL player yet and thus worth less.

I do think Vancouver overpaid for Kassian though, and I like Kassian. Hodgson is just better imo

Kulemin has 3 shots in total this entire freaking season. Putting him out with Clarkson and Bozak will help him get more offensive chances and he and clarkson can dominate the boards game. I'm not expecting that line to be a true #2 line in terms of offensive production.

Smith's ahead of him? Might want to rethink that one bud, Holland was on the top line last game and Smith on the 3rd now if Smith was ahead of Holland a) he'd be on the top line and b) Nonis wouldn't have pulled the trigger on the deal.

I think Kadri and Bozak when healthy have the top center slots locked up pretty well, I like Holland's game so far but I could see Smith fitting in better as a 3rd or 4th line center than Holland would.

That being said really like what I saw last night and it's nice to get some much needed depth at center.

The only thing I can say about Holland is he seems really confident on the draws and that could play in to the fact of keeping him around even when Bozie and Kadri is back. Also we have to remember he still has time to prove what he can do as that was only his first game after a whirlwind of a day.

My biggest concern was that whenever he had an opportunity to finish a check, he'd slow almost to a stop before coasting into the player barely making contact, or he'd just plain avoid contact altogether and skate by the player.

I noticed that too. He had a couple of chances to nail Ristolainen but held back for no discernible reason. He'd better start finishing those checks if he wants to keep a bottom 6 spot, let alone a top 6 one.

Trevor Smith 20:03 TOI

Peter Holland 11:43 TOI

This doesn't really prove much but when you look at the big picture in roles players play Peter Holland was brought in to buy some time until Kadri & Bozak return... It was more of a trade for the Marlies than anything else trading a guy that didn't dress for a guy that will play for them down on the farm while adding some organizational depth to position lacking in depth. Barring a special performance from Holland His stint will be short lived with Bozak 's return just around the corner and Kadri back after the next game... neither Smith or Holland will be with the team when they return both will be sent down to the Marlies cause McClement is Bollands replacement and Smithson is the 4th line center.

12 minutes is definitely not enough time to judge him one way or the other. He'd didn't look out of place, but didn't do anything too spectacular either. Over the coming weeks/months we'll see whether he looks like a long term NHLer or not, but for the time being I'm just glad to have another centre in the lineup so we can play our wingers where they belong, on the wings.

If he pans out while bolland is out then he can shift to wing or even center the 4th line with mcclement once everyone is healthy. would be nice to have another center on the roster for a playoff run.
