No, sir. Donato looked worse than Cehlarik in camp. Donato stayed up because he racked up a pretty sick pile of points last season when he joined the team from Harvard and because he is getting some kind of special consideration from the FO/coaching staff based on reasons most all of us here can only guess at. I don't know if Cehlarik would be looking any better in place of Donato right now, but for many us, we felt he earned a shot out of camp.

Well there was certainly something in cehlariks game that kept him off the team and he got sent back to the AHL, now he’s getting healthy scratched in the AHL.

At least donato a proven he can play at the nhl in his small stint. 10 points in 18 career games compared to cehlariks 4 points in 17 career games.

If we are choosing between two guys who are struggling to play without the puck, I’ll at least take the guy who has put up more numbers.

That is/was a factor no doubt.

Stats can be deceiving if you are going to make this argument I guess I will see you in the Krejci thread saying that he is just as good as Bergeron since statistically they are pretty even for their careers.

Cehlarik played better in his 17 NHL games than Donato has up until now. Its why people are upset he didn't get a shot after camp.

Cehlarik has not been better in his nhl games than donato. If he were, then he would be on the NHL team and not getting scratched on the AHL team. Cehlarik was awful without the puck in the NHL and by the looks of him getting scratched in the AHL that has continued. Same thing plagues donato but at least donato has put up 6 more points while playing in only 1 more game.

Have you watched Cehlarik in Providence this year? Or is this just speculation?

Makes me wonder if all those Cehlarik rumors were true about teams wanting to deal for him. If so, we should have pounced because his value is obviously worse now

The odd thing about all this is many of us felt he was much much stronger on the boards and he drove the net harder pre season. This is complete pile of poo. One thing I can say he has a tendency of doing quick no look passing in some danger areas of the ice. I defend that 2 ways. He’s definitely not alone trying this and his line mates are caught off guard. This kid see things much like a Krejci. 2 plays ahead.
First NHL point was a beautiful cross ice pass to McQuaid, yes McQuaid, for a goal. First NHL goal was a follow up up on DeBrusk's miss when he drove to the net with Cehlarik following, which was started by Cehalrik rushing up the ice and giving Jake a nice backhand feed in the NZ in traffic. In his stint with the Krejci line he created space and made great passes quite often but the line was snake bit when it came to goals, as the post seemed to dominate. The solid chances were certainly there.

Preseason this year Cehlarik stymied Johnny Hockey in his own zone which ended up in a goal. Then there was the absolutely sick backhand pass by Cehalrik to Moore for a goal in the same game. Against Philly Cehlarik got a nice goal while putting himself right in front of the crease. Same game Carlo scored from distance because Cehlarik created a great screen in front of the goalie. Cehlarik's strong board work then later on led to another Bs goal. He was near the crease and along the boards a TON that game battling. You get the picture.

f*** the AHL. Again, I don't give two shits about what he does or doesn't do in the AHL. What he has shown in the NHL is a more complete game than what Donato has been bringing this season. Cehlarik is an excellent passer who is not afraid to get dirty. I am only basing my thoughts on what I've seen the players do on the ice in games. Also, I'm not convinced Donato necessarily needs to be sitting if Cehlarik is brought up. There are other options in creating lines.

Lol cehlarik is getting scratched from an AHL team so I’m not sure your statement is true. If cehlarik looked better than donato, he would have started the year with the bruins
I watched the pre season games and Cehlarik outplayed Donato by a very large amount. Donato may have a more potential but he didn't deserve the spot that was given to him. The argument everyone was using with Cehlarik was he couldn't stay healthy but when he was up he looked better beside Krejci than Donato did and so did Bjork so I don't know why he was given as much chances as he was cause right now he reminds me alot Vatrano good shot but nothing else

I’ve seen his game Without the puck struggle at the nhl level and in the pre season. As far as Providence, according to Divver he was healthy scratched because of his lacking board play.

Looks like the same things that have been plaguing him his whole career are continuing.

Donato has 1 point this season getting tons of time on PP1 and regular shifts.
Below is a charateristic play of Donato this season in motion. Yes, the other guy is a rookie in his very first game in NHL.

A little context, donato is 8th on the bruins in power play minutes per game and only 5 seconds more per game than David backes who has zero points this season in one more game played than donato. I don’t think that qualifies as ‘tons of time’

Dahlin may be a rookie but he was the first overall pick, who is playing really well to start the season.

Donato has 10 points in 18 nhl games played while spending majority of this season on a line with backes who has been terrible. Cehlarik spent the majority of his time on the second line with Krejci and still only managed 4 points in 17 games and his first year with the bruins cehlarik averaged 1:23 minutes on the powerplay per game and the second year he averaged 2:01 per game on the power play.

They’ve had very equal opportunity and donato has out preformed cehlarik, while cehlarik is getting healthy scratched for an AHL team.

Most of those points Donato scored was also on a line with Krejci. I don’t think he’s played with Backes much at all outside of the last few games he’s played.

Do you really think Donato’s all around game is better than Cehlarik’s right now?

I think they struggle in the same areas, but I think donato has a clear offensive edge. I would personally fix the 3rd line center issue before anything else.

He hasn’t produced any offense this year outside of one power play goal. Cehalrik is much better without the puck, defensively, and on the cycle. I don’t know why he’s still on the team and not learning this stuff in the AHL. I also don’t care that Cehalrik was scratched, he’s looked better in his call ups and if Donato isn’t producing like he did last year, he’s a liability.

This should probably go to Donato's thread, here is his PP TOI so far:

WSH 1:37
BUF 0:23
OTT 2:37
DET 2:22
CGY 1:04
EDM 2:29

Avereged time is 1:46 minutes per game. He has scored 1 goal on PP to show for. During even strength he is a black hole offensively and a liability in his own end. Using Backes as a benchmark is lame, the guy has had several concussions and is much older . What's Donato's excuse?

Well we will agree to disagree because getting healthy scratched at the AHL is embarrassing for a player that believes they deserve an nhl roster spot. Donato has proven more with better linemates offensively than cehlarik. Donato did well last year and actually produced points with Krejci last year unlike cehlariks 4 points in 17 games. Not donato and bjork fault they have arguable the worst top 6 center in the nhl through the first two weeks of the nhl season.

I’m not even here saying donato is playing well. I just think backes is way more of a problem on that line than either of them. Backes Is pretty much the complete opposite type center that bjork and donato need to succeed. Their game is built off speed and backes slows them down incredibly.

I agree about Backes but that aside... What is Donato bringing to the team right now? He couldn’t score with Krejci and Debrusk either.

You’re using his healthy scratch as a way of saying his all around game is on par with Donato’s. Did you watch him play on the Krejci line and his most recent callup?

Cehlarik has Jared Knight written all over him. No, I don't mean that he will be some kind of big bust; his fans are wearing blinders here. 99/100 when a player is playing bad, that's on the player rather than the coach or organization.

He was one of the last cuts during preseason. This is nothing like Jared Knight lol. Cehlarik has actually played in the NHL and looked good, I watched Knight play for Providence and he never looked good to me. I don’t even think Knight fans were saying he should be playing on the Bruins at any point.

Cehlarik is slightly better defensively, both of them suck in the corners and donato is much better offensively. I’ll leave it at that. Cehlarik would look just as bad playing with backes that donato does. If they were both put on Krejcis line I believe donato would out perform cehlarik. By the looks of donato staying on the club and cehlarik being burried on the 4th last his last two games in Providence then getting scratched due to poor board play, it looks like the team feels that way as well.

Well hopefully all this offense Donato is adding shows up tonight. 1 point this year and -3.

Once upon a time, guys like Matt Bartkowski and Jordan Caron were one of the last cuts. Being 'one of the last cuts' is an interesting trivia question but means pretty much nothing in the grand scheme of things.

They did say Cassidy should be fired because he clearly had it out for the guy and purposefully was trying to ruin his career. Now we are going down a similar path with management not knowing what they are doing. There are some cases when that is true, but it is far more frequent when the player just is not playing up to snuff.
