Actually, Smith has had a better career overall although he sucks on the Pens…
Take out each of their first two seasons when neither was really a regular or had hit their stride and Rust averages ~56pts a season to Smith's ~51pts. Total, Rust averages ~52pts a year across his 537 game career. Smith's at right about 50pts a season on the dot over 804 games.

Neither is really anything special.

True, point averages aren’t everything …it’s pretty clear Rust has been less available due to injury over the years than Smith

Exactly. Despite being shouted down for years now about how these guys are all definitely whiz-bang top six players that any team would be thrilled to have for 5M a piece... they're just slightly jumped-up Nick Spalings.

I'd rather have ONE ~10M dollar difference maker and deal with the void on the other wing than two of these 5M dollar placeholders.

You retain on Jake at the TDL to sweeten the return (and open up the available destinations) and look to move EK this summer with money retained. Then you've got two retained slots taken up and Jake's comes off the books if the team wants to use it to move Rust or Rakell or whatever. I dunno. This team's dogshit and the people running it make damn sure it won't ever be anything but dogshit. Blow it up already.

I think we need our gm to make some calls to see what we really could get before we make any discissions.

He should've been doing that for weeks, if not months, at this point. But this team loves the stink of their own shit too much to make a proactive, albeit "difficult" (it's not difficult) move like trading Jake before they lose him for nothing to re-sign him to an asinine retirement deal.

& most have NMC & NTC's But don't let that get in the way
absolutely! and then go see if they want to stay. after they know what you think of them. they just might want to go.

Dubas should be discussing everyone who is not the core…see what the returns are
he very well could be but then he would be doing something and that doesn't fit what some posters think.

Exactly. It's like would you rather have prime Crosby at $10 million or two 55 point guys at $5 million each. You don't just add up their totals to say the two 55 point guys are better value.

Honestly, it's kind of going back to my issue with how this org has been building its roster and the type of wingers it keeps surrounding Sid/Geno with. Not enough "play drivers" and just a bunch of complementary 50 point guys who need Sid/Geno to do all the creating.

TBF to the organization true play driving wingers are extremely rare and difficult to acquire. If they signed Gaudreau how would we be feeling right now? What about moving for Huberdeau?
