I believe, based solely on the evil stare that Dupers gave to Potash last night, and his 1.5 shifts on the 3rd line, that Bylsma has turned the corner as a coach and has these men in killing mode. Blood in the water! Victory is assured!

I was lurking into the Devils' GDT, looking for optimism. I found nothing.

Dupuis is angry. The Devils should just forfeit.

  5. So any chance Dupuis stays on the 3rd line? No?

So many Martins in this one, Martin Brodeur, Paul Martin and Jacques Martin. We have more Martins, therefore a victory of 2 Martins to 1 Martin.

It's going to be a stretch of no stupidly long breaks, so that's good.

That was a shift after a PP. Not a regular shift.

Because Dupes isn't talented enough to even be on the second PP unit, but he is talented enough to be on the first line.

    Makes perfect sense.

Going to the game. Was at the Kings v Devils game last night. The Devils looked HORRID.

I fully expect to lose 5-1, and Jagr to score a hat trick.

They cancelled the morning skate so as far as I know, we don't know. MAF didn't face a lot of shots, though.

If I had to guess, I would say Zatkoff, though. The team tightened up defensively to give him a shutout last time and with the many upcoming games in a rather short period of time, there's not really a reason to ride MAF through back-to-back games at this point. Against one of the worst offenses in the league, no less.
The only argument for Fleury would be the losing streak just snapped and that we want to make sure that we start a winning streak. But that's not really making a lot of sense since we mainly had problems scoring goals during that span.

Zatkoff shouldn't play automatically because it's a back to back situation. No reason to sit Fleury.

So, why should he play? Or when? A lot of teams pretty automatically split back-to-backs between their starter and their backup.

That's what I think will happen but I could see them riding Fleury to try and gain some momentum; he really wasn't taxed last night. This is also one of the few "safe," games in this stretch for Zatkoff to be played in. Anyway, probably Zatkoff but Fleury isn't impossible or even highly improbable.

I think playing in front of Zatkoff like they did last time could be good for this team, so there's that too.

Pens play a ton of a games in the next few weeks. Stupid not to play Zatkoff. I don't see the reasoning in game number 20 of 82+playoffs being a big momentum shifter. This team is going to play the same style regardless of the results; i.e. those "lucky bounces" that appear/don't appear when they lose.

We still need to know what we have in Zatkoff. If we don't play him in back-to-back scenarios, then when?

I'd have played Zatkoff last night, and was surprised he didn't play. As we saw, Nashville couldn't score in a brothel.

But he will in the next two weeks. No reason to start off this grind with back-to-backs for MAF except, as vabm8 said, they want to make sure to get some momentum going now.

While I tend to agree, the Pens have a tough stretch coming up:

    Nov 18 - Anaheim
    Nov 20 - Washignton
    Nov 22 - NY Islanders
    Nov 23 - Montreal
    Nov 25 - Boston
    Nov 27 - Toronto
    Nov 29 - Tampa Bay
    Nov 30 - Florida

He'll probably have to start the first 7 of those 8, which a break finally coming against Florida. It wouldn't hurt for him to get the night off, but I also understand the reason to start him tonight - namely, the team's playing poorly enough that the coaching staff may not trust Zatkoff behind them at the moment, and that's more about the state of the team than it is about Zatkoff.

As would I. Nashville's struggling in all aspects of the game. It would've been a much better fit for Zatkoff than having to take on a divisional rival.

I believe it was a mistake to play Fleury yesterday. A struggling offensive Nashville > Devils for Zatkoff. Fleury should have been in today.

Also, with regard to Maatta. He needs to be in today. Bylsma has the incredibly destructive habit of sitting young guys after a few mistakes. This does nothing but kicks them when they are down and hurts the confidence. Maatta's strength has been his confidence and ability to rebound after a mistake. You take that opportunity away from him and you are doing nothing but cutting down his strengths by showcasing his momentary weaknesses. Now instead of focusing on what he needs to be doing right, he's going to be more occupied by focusing on not doing something wrong again so that he doesn't get benched.

On top of that, watching veteran players **** up and have nothing happen to them doesn't help inspire confidence in younger players who get punished for it either.

You brought the kid in because he proved to be one of the better defenders, you're burning a year of his ELC. He needs to be in to get the chance to rebound. What little credibility Bylsma has left will be erased should he bench Maatta in favor of Bortz, Engo, Nisky, etc.

    Nisky-Letang
    Martin-Orpik
    Maatta-Bortz

Not that hard. Maatta has 10x more to gain and lose by playing vs not playing compared to Engo.

I think Montreal's offense is struggling too, but still 6/8 where MAF should be playing. At least the Zatkoff friendly games are the back to backs. The flipside to the team not playing well is that Zatkoff being in net might motivate them to be more structured.

I thought that Maatta rebounded within the game, so hopefully that plays into things.
