Bad pens arena news

From mark madden...

Madden's news:

1. speaking with Pens management, they told him there has been 0 progress in arena talks despite city & county people's claims to the contraty.

2. Rendell has his excuse already set for why they won't give the license to the Pens: "If we gave them one, we'd have to give one to the Steelers, one to the Eagles, etc. And that wouldn't be fair".

3. A deal will be in place for the Pens to move to Vegas or KC before the slots license is awarded.

This is nothing new... Mark Madden is a moron.

He also said his "inside sources" told him Kovy was a done deal in the offseason.

Last time I looked, Kovy played for the Habs.

4 left in the running...

- The Penguins, who are teaming with Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. in an effort to build a $1 billion-plus arena/casino/entertainment development in the lower Hill District.

- Alco Parking owner Merrill Stabile, who wants to build a casino on a parking lot across from PNC Park.

- Forest City Enterprises, of Cleveland, which is working with Harrah's on a casino at Station Square.

- Don Barden, the country's only African-American casino owner with five venues, including Las Vegas, on 17 acres between the Carnegie Science Center and the West End Bridge.

Newly elected Mayor Bob O'Connor and Dan Ornato are working on a Plan B just in case they don't gets the slots licence, in order to keep the Pens in Pittsburgh.

This is false. There is no way Philadelphia would be after a new arena. We just opened the one we have 8 years ago. Moreover, at least we have the NBA here too.

Although Mark Madden was one of the first who said the lockout was over back in January so I could care elss.

Madden might have some sources with the Penguins, but I usually take what he says with a grain of salt.

For starters, I find it hard to believe that the Penguins think no progress is being made. They might think that the politicians who are all seemingly casting votes of support are full of BS, and they very well may be, but other people vying for the license are dropping out of the race. There are only 4 left, and I believe at least one of them will pay for an arena as part of the package.

So, while the Penguins themselves getting a license may still not be a certainty, things seem to be looking relatively good for a new arena being built, one way or the other.

It's essentially a two way race. Pens or Station Square. The other two plans are both on the North Shore and opposed by the Steelers and just about every business owner over there. Station Square will only put up half the price of the arena, I believe.

He's saying it wouldn't be fair to give them an entirely paid for arena.

You are in such denial. It is a VERY real possibilty that the Pens are gonna be out of Pittsburgh. Take everything you read seriously. I'll rest easy when ground is broken for a new arena, but not a second sooner.

Area lawmakers big fans of arena plan

A team of local lawmakers is expected to line up today behind the Penguins' plan to fund a new hockey arena with casino money. The 18 politicians -- mostly Democrats, and two Republicans -- include four state senators, nine state representatives, four members of Pittsburgh City Council and Allegheny County Councilman Bill Robinson.

Penguins officials declined to comment on the endorsements, expected at a news conference this morning.

After the news conference, some of the lawmakers are expected to travel with team officials to Columbus, Ohio, where the Penguins are playing the Columbus Blue Jackets this evening.

Penguins taking delegation to see Columbus' Arena District development

The Penguins will lead a delegation of political and civic leaders to Columbus today to check out the district and to attend the Pens-Blue Jackets game at Nationwide Arena, considered one of the top hockey venues in the country.

"We want people to see what can be done around an arena in an arena district and how a redevelopment like the billion-dollar redevelopment we're proposing can impact the city in a positive way," Penguins consultant David Morehouse said yesterday.

From the article, three of the four competitors have said that they would pay for all (Capri/Pens), some or perhaps some of the arena. Only one has not committed. One guess as to who.

Amazing article on the slots issue in todays Post Gazetter. Some excerpts:

Brian Ellis, Nationwide Realty president and chief operating officer, said the Pittsburgh development would be similar to that in Columbus, though the mix of offices, entertainment and residential may differ, depending on market conditions.

As in Columbus, the overall goal is to bring people Downtown. But Nationwide also will have the added task, should the Penguins win the slots license, of trying to reconnect the Hill with Downtown.

"We want this to be an extension of the city of Pittsburgh," Mr. Ellis said.

I wish that I could have quoted the entire article but if this group does not get the license it would be so very clear that the fix was in. No other group comes close to offering what this one does, to the city, not to the Pens, not to the NHL in Pittsburgh.

18 local officials line up behind Penguins' arena-casino plan

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06012/636601.stm

Ms. Payne said the proposal gives the community a chance to "right a wrong" that occurred more than four decades ago when the then-Civic Arena was built and essentially separated the Hill District from Downtown.

"This wasn't a hard one for me. It's an opportunity to create jobs. If you want a vibrant city, people need to work so they have money to spend and contribute to the economy and the city," she said. The plan also "changes the whole landscape for Uptown and the community."

Rendell: Penguins need a 'Plan B'

By Jason Cato
TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Rendell said he contacted Penguins officials recently to talk about an alternate plan.

"They didn't want to talk about it," Rendell said. "They only wanted to talk about a gaming license. That's Plan A, but they need to start looking at Plan B."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Should the team sell, Rendell said he and other state officials would be willing to work with them on ways to build a new arena and keep the team in Pittsburgh. Rendell cited the way Philadelphia built a new arena as a possibility for Pittsburgh.

The Wachovia Center, as the arena is now called, opened in 1996 and cost about $206 million. The arena was paid for mostly with private money, but the city and state helped pay for the infrastructure to support it.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

If the Penguins ownership intended to put the team up for sale to pressure the Gaming Control Board into approving its proposal, Rendell said that is a "misguided strategy."

But if the team moves because of this gaming issue then that is a misguided stratagy as well.

Would the ... city? State?

Answer: yes. They already did. The city and state kicked in quite a bit to get new stadiums built for the Pirates and Steelers.

Road to the Repeat
Sadly, this situation has been building for years and anyone who chose to read between the lines could see that the Pens were in a bad situation and Governor Rendell was not doing anything to help. While this is not entirely his fault, Rendell is not doing anything to help. Since the beginning of the slots, it was clear that his buddy was going to get the slots license and by delaying the announcement it might allow him to save a little face if the Penguins franchise acts first. This is a total shame. Mismanagement and government red tape have led to this. The fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins, myself included, are getting hurt and its terrible because we support our team despite the fact that they play in a horribly outdated arena with a fairly bad team.

Having recently moved to Florida for a job, I have had to explain this to many people who cannot understand why the Pens might move. They always say the fan support is strong and the team has a bright future on the ice, so why would Pittsburgh allow the Pens to move away. I give them the above answer but its still confusing to everyone. I hope the Pens remain in Pittsburgh but things are not looking positive.

This is the last and final option. There was a promise from the city when Mario bought the team from bankruptcy, broken. There were other broken promises. Now Rendell seems to be saying 'be happy with a couple of roads built to an arena you build' when there is a free arena and $1 b. dollar offer from slots money, that will go somewhere so why not give SOMETHING back to the city. His friend has offered zero, nothing, will pocket it all. If it happens it is over a $240,000 bribe . . .ummm . . . donation. From a guy from Cleveland who will take all the money to Ohio. Rendell should be shot. Why would the Pens build their own arena when a half dozen other places will build one for them, and give them money to boot? Rendell, the governor of Philly and only Philly, is the most corrupt Governor in PA history, and that is saying something.

Well he will be back for a second term unless you vote for Lynn Swan in the November elections. :biglaugh:

That's the thing . . .he NEEDS Pittsburgh, and to go big for him. I do not see how he wins if he does not back a Pens arena. I do not sense anyone at all in Pittsburgh, in the population, against this. And many care. He loses unless he backs the slots plan hard from what I see. He would lose to Stalin or Hitler on the other side unless he backs a slots plan. The talk shows, people, everyone is for this here. Was it worth $240,000? I do not get it do you?
