It sounds like the cap will be back up to $70 million for next year. Guessing the RFA contracts and realizing that Kulemin is going to sign here, we have:

Kunitz (3.85)-Crosby (8.7)-Bennett (.9)
Kulemin (3.5)-Malkin (9.5)-Neal (5)
Megna (1)-Sutter (3)-Dupuis (3.75)
Zolnierczyk (.6)-YYYY-Adams (.7)

Letang (7.25)-Scuderi (3.375)
Despres (3)-Martin (5)
Maatta (.895)-Bortuzzo (.6)

Fleury (5)-ZZZZ

Total: $65.7 million

More likely than not, YYYY is going to be Vitale for around $700,000, so that's 12 F, 6 D and a goalie for $66.4 million. That gives us roughly $3.6 million for a backup, a 7th D and 2 depth F.

I'll cry until Noah builds another arch if this isn't Joe Victory

I don't see Megna getting $1m not do I see Despres getting $3m.

$850k and $2.25m are more likely I'd guess.

Would rather have something like this:

Linus Klasen is a Swedish ice hockey player, currently playing for Luleå HF of the Elitserien. A very skilled player offensively. Klasen has excellent technical skills and is a quite spectacular player to watch. He likes to challenge defenseman and usually does it very well.

He's also 5'8" 170. No thanks, especially on the 3rd line.

What do people think Vitale will get in free agency? And what do we think is the likelihood of him staying here? I could see a team that's weak at center looking at his faceoff numbers and thinking he could possibly fill a role as a third line center in which case I'm not sure why he'd want to stay in Pittsburgh to play on the fourth line.

We have Sill to fill Vitale's role, I don't see the need to keep him.

Klasen have become a much better player since he went to Luleå. He is know a competent 2-way player, he has insane skill, great skating and is a good forchecker.

If you want a swedish winger for the 3rd line you should look at Simon Hjalmarsson, not Klasen ffs.

Hjalmarsson is like Dupuis, but with hands.

Klasen-Dupuis/Sutter-Hjalmarsson would be a epic third line.

And the wingers in the top 9 could be switch around without any big drop of in quality

I do not see the point of getting Linus Klasen when you have a similar player in Brian Gibbons. Penguins need grit on the third-line, not an undersized two-way player.

Shero has managed this team horribly over the past 2 years, and that includes the cap.

Dupuis @ 3.75M till he's 38 is ****ing horrible
Adams @ 0.7M till he's 38 is ****ing horrible
Holding onto Nisky this summer instead of trading him for a forward is ****ing horrible
Extending Letang when his value couldn't have been higher @ 7.25M for 8 years is ****ing horrible
Paying Glass 1.1M when he had two free buyouts is ****ing horrible

Can't wait till Sutter gets 3M+ and Orpik gets re-signed!

Adams can always be sent to the minors, and because his contract is less than 900k, wouldn't count towards the cap.

One nice thing about the cap going up (71.1m - likely higher, as the mid season estimates are usually low), is that we can actually get some depth this summer. I'd allow Jokinen to go (even though I like him) in an attempt to sign a better winger for Crosby. Even after signing someone like Kulemin (3m), that still leaves the Pens with roughly 5m for another top 6 winger.

Moulson, Gaborik, Vanek, Cammalleri, Michalek, Roy (C yes, but could likely play wing), Steen, Vrbata, Seto. Now most likely won't make it to FA... but a few might. And while we likely can't afford the top FAs, it's possible that we could get the guys better suited as a 2nd line winger.

Am I the only one who thinks with a new/good coach Orpik will be good again?

He probably could be. But with the guys we have in the system, why spend the 4m+ it'll take to find out?

Despres will probably get a deal like Palmieri (3 years, $1.47 AAV). I'd be very happy with that. Megna, I'm not sure on. He's making $925,000 off his ELC right now. Will he take a pay cut? The $925,000 probably only happened because there were other teams in the running for Megna. Hartzell took a pay cut (from $1.6 million to $550,000), so I'm not sure. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a 2 year, $750,000 AAV contract. Also, I'd much rather sign Kulemin than re-sign Jokinen.

Yes he took a paycut for his NHL salary, however he received a raise on his AHL salary (70k to 105k, and 225k). Not that it impacts the NHL team (cap wise), but just stating why.

There's really not a lot of names that interest me in FA. We could probably get Gaborik cheaper because of the injuries he has had. I'd definitely do that, considering he's a natural RW, would probably sign for less because of the mediocre last 2 seasons and isn't terribly old. Vanek is an interesting piece as well, along with Camalleri. However, both are LW, so I'm not sure how that would work. Other than that, the FA class sucks. If it's between Kulemin at $2.75 million and Gaborik at $4 million, we obviously should go with Gaborik.

Gaborik has really fallen off since his 41 goal season in 11-12. Only 17 goals and 38 points in his last 64 games. He definitely would be an excellent but low candidate.

There's a few options out there. I hope that Shero allows Nisky and Orpik to walk so that we have some money to at least talk to these players.
