Opening game against NJ, this is what I would like to see:

Kunitz - Crosby - Dupuis
Jokinen - Malkin - Neal (Jokinen taking important faceoffs)
Kobasew - Sutter - Bennett (Bennett on his natural side and can make plays)
D'agostini - Vitale - Adams

Orpik - Martin
Scuderi - Niskanen
Maatta - Bortuzzo

Fleury

Updated with Kobasew's contract.

Good stuff as always Shureshot. Keeping the board cap-literate as always. :thumbu:

Many thanks. Now if only we could get a certain Trib beat writer to pay attention. Very frustrating to see it put in print that a guy on LTIR has his cap hit come off the books.

Anyways, it's going to be a tough spot later in the season, because they're going to have to get rid of someone just to bring back Vokoun back to the active roster.

Bennett is far better on the left side than Kobasew, who has been playing against fourth liners the last two seasons. When you play on the fourth line, it matters little if they stick you on the left side or at center (which is what Colorado did). But when you're playing in the top nine, you need to put your best out there. The third line on this team should be Jokinen-Sutter-Kobasew, with Bennett in a top-six forward role (which is what he was drafted for). And I don't care if Jokinen leads the NHL in scoring in October, my opinion won't change. Bennett is a solution to the problems we had against Boston in the playoffs. Jokinen is not.

Well, if by the time Vokoun is ready to be activated we won't have made a goaltender move by then, it means somehow, some way Fleury survived. Or, it means Zatkoff emerged. Neither is likely.

I'm fairly certain the first big move of this season will be with regards to the goaltending situation. And obviously we'll need to move salary in order to do so. So by the time Vokoun is ready, it'll be a moot point.

I fully expect Vokoun to be out past the trade deadline. The rest would do grandpa some good at his age and with this condition and we would easily find a dance partner at a good return at the deadline for a player. Niskanen for instance.

A few roster thoughts...

If Letang is expected to come back for the Oct. 8th game, Maatta will probably only be here for 2 games before getting sent back to juniors.

Putting D'agostini on LTIR is the only reason we could afford to sign Kobasew. We currently have 310K in cap space. D'ags cannot come off LTIR without a subsequent move. Now simply sending Maatta back will clear the necessary space. However, D'ags has to miss at least 10 games and Maatta will be here for less time than that. Will we just role with a 22 man roster until his return, will we call Despres or a forward like Harry Z or Sill up for a few games and send him back again when D'agostini comes back, or will we be making a trade?

I noticed that as well. They really have to assess the roster these next 10 games and open up some cap flexibility.

Such a shame that some players are just eating up not only a roster spot but good chunks of the cap where the money could be better spent.

If the injuries pile up, the players mentioned in the above sentence really put a dent into rounding out a competitive lineup.

WB/S signed Drouin-Deslauriers and Carman to 25 game PTOs.. so it looks like it'll be a Hartzell & JDD tandem to start the year. Here's the lines at their practice as per Bombulie, though some guys (Sill, Farnham, Dumoulin) are still out of the line-up (but all seem close to returning).

Conner-Ebbett-Kuhnhackl
Kostopoulos-Drzenovic-Thompson
Zolnierczyk-Gibbons-Megna
Uher/Payerl/Carman/Leblond

Mikkelson-Samuelsson
McNeill-Harrington
Despres- Merth/D’Agostino

Deslauriers-Hartzell

Perhaps we should have a floating baby Pens thread for these sort of updates.

Have you watched any of the preseason?

Jokinen with Geno and Neal has looked really good. Good enough to maybe lay distinction this season at being one of the most productive lines in hockey.

Bennett playing 3rd line, especially on his natural side, won't kill him at all. In fact, I think him playing on that line and having more offensive responsibility is good for him.

And after watching how this team has worked over the years, you know these lines are not concrete. Bennett will play probably a decent amount of mins in the top 6 on a night to night basis. The game just won't start that way.

I'm sorry, I was too busy watching Bennett hit everything that moves, playing sound two-way hockey and creating scoring opportunities without any help from anyone in the PLAYOFFS, I didn't pay attention to the PRESEASON exploits of Jussi Jokinen.

Come on. Bennett is being stiffed here (again) and we all know it.

What do you have against Jokinen playing in 2nd line? JJ is perfect with guys like Malkin and Neal and crucial help at situations when you need to win a faceoff. Last season JJ did 55% and Geno only 47.2% of FOW. Geno is getting better but JJ is still far ahead.

Bennett > JJ as a winger for Malkin for reasons Jags clearly articulated.

That said, it looks like Geno will have both for a little bit. Bylsma said so, really. :sarcasm:

Heaven help us if that trio takes off, because then Neal would become a 5M per year third liner.

Niskanen makes a lot of sense if the cap is a main consideration.

This is a pretty interesting look at the future of the cap by James Mirtle. Worth a read to distract you from the sound of everyone on the roster's bones breaking at the same time.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/spor...two-years/article15627506/#dashboard/follows/

Most interesting is this handy chart, estimating the growth of the cap:

So what would be a good guess for the cap next year factoring in the new tv deal? 70-71?

The cap is based on the HRR (hockey-related revenues) from the previous year. So the 2014-15 cap is calculated just on figures from this season, in which there is no new TV deal yet.

The 2015-16 season is the first one that could potentially be affected by the TV negotiations.

The ceiling isn't the issue, but rather the floor. The least profitable teams in the league will be forced to spend much more money than they can afford.

By 2020, the no-trade clause will simply be known as the Dupuis Clause!

The floor is a big worry for me as well.

Cool. I thought the ceiling was gonna be closer to 70 next year. Makes keeping orpik impossible if not. Best news ive heard all season.

Yeah, that was a concern of mine before this last fCBA negotiation. Not all hockey related revenue is created equal so you'll always have the haves and the have nots.

That TV deal was huge for the game though
