On the news of the hiring of Paul Maclean as a PP specialist, why is Larsen still employed? This is now the second PP specialist hired (St. Louis) in less than a year. If you've coached the worst PP in the league over the last 2.5 years to the tune that the team has had to consistently hire outside consultants...like...why are you still employed?

Yeah, have to wonder why Larsen wasnt removed. Could be a good hire though, more of a players coach if I remember correctly than a guy who is always a hardass

Torts said Larsen came to him and asked for an outside voice for the PP. I guess he also said Larsen is integral to the 5-on-5 play, so he's staying on to coach the forwards. All of it is very weird.

Then give him some power. Will every idea be vetoed by a longer tenured assistant?

Decent chance that trouble is brewing...

I have no idea but a new voice may be seen as a threat to a struggling team with coaches who might be beginning to look over their shoulders.

This certainly creates all sorts of future coaching hypothetical scenarios .

Also a ready to install head coach if one is needed?

Just for giggles. Some good young talent on those teams that has had success in the league.

CBJ add Paul MacLean to club's coaching staff

The Columbus Blue Jackets announced today that veteran National Hockey League coach and player Paul MacLean has joined the club as an assistant coach/special teams on Head Coach John Tortorella's staff.

How many times is the team going to have to bring in a special special teams assistant?

He's been brought on board as full time assistant coach, no? I don't think the club has done this before.

Then give him some power. Will every idea be vetoed by a longer tenured assistant?

Decent chance that trouble is brewing...

Larsen doesn't sit above Maclean, and as of now Larsen has no PP coaching portfolio. It's 3 assistant coaches all under Torts. If there's trouble it's going to be between Maclean and Torts.

That was one part of Larsen's job. And he didn't have full authority over the PP, Torts did.

Maybe he's good at other parts of his job, we have no way of knowing.

Doesn't change the nature of my question.

I don't think he's a special assistant. I think he's an assistant coach with a special teams portfolio.

"Special special teams assistant" sounded like Marty St. Louis' job. This is more like a regular assistant coach.

So why is Brad Larsen even here anymore?
Why wouldn’t he be ? It’s Torts that has had a top 10 powerplay 2 times in his coaching career . Think about that , only 2 of torts teams have had better than an average powerplay. This is a problem with Torts and the teams he coaches, not Larsen , and Torts knows that .

Snore.

Maurice was not on staff before? The power play has been bad? Maurice's job is primarily power play?

I reiterate -- Doesn't change the nature of my question.

Not sure I follow. Maurice?

You're implying this is Marty St. Louis 2.0, "how many times is the team going to have to....?"

Marty St. Louis was an advisor who flew in from Connecticut every now and then to help players during PP practice. He wasn't the PP coach, Larsen was.

Paul Maclean has been hired as a full time regular assistant coach. He'll stand behind the bench and take over all of the PP related tasks Larsen used to do, possibly more.

This isn't something the club has done before.
