3 million for Nemeth? Not a fan of this one at all. He's a #6 who is now making 3 million per year. He's the definition of "meh". Not exciting, just a typical #6....

The start to Yzerman's tenure as a GM is not going very well.....
Players want either term or money. If Stevie offered him $2.5M, he'd probably want 4 years.

Given that all of these contracts are 2 years I think that gives us a time table for when Yzerman plans on going all in during free agency.... 2 years from now.

Be prepared for more disappointment next offseason.

I don't think the outrage is that this move will hinder the rebuild, or that Nemeth is terrible.

Its that a 6th/7th defensive defenceman IS NOT WORTH 3 million a year!
Given our blueline is either old and injured or young and inexperienced, I'm guessing he'll be more of a 5/6 or even god forbid a 4/5 depending on injuries.

6'3'' 235 + rugged + just turned 27 . we need this type dman both today and tomorrow . plus hes a swede so most probably a hard worker and conservative guy in the room fitting the redwing culture perfectly . and 3 mil is nothing now adays , ecspecially when weve got like 3 dmen possibly off the roster so their caps going . to me this is an under the radar excellent add = just what i expect from yzerman !

The entire left side is all third pair D. Take your pick:
- DDK
- Kronwall
- BigE
- Daley
- Nemeth
- Cholo (the only one with upside)
- AHL scrubs (Lashoff, Hicketts, McIlrath, etc)

Well, Dekeyser isn't a 3rd pairing dman, Kronwall is likely gone, Daley and Ericsson are injury prone, and Cholowski may not be a regular roster player yet. And Nemeth is better than Hicketts, Lashoff and McIlrath.

You are entitled to your own opinion about DDK.

I would not be surprised at all if Nemeth got 20+ min a night alongside Green or Hronek, just because he's young enough to handle it. Remember that Jensen was getting 20+ before he got traded.

Plus if DDK got traded to a contender like the Caps, he'd be third pair just like Jensen.

Brothers an avs fan ( I know right). Said Nemeth was a healthy scratch often, but never understood why as everytime he was in he was solid. Good defensive defensemen, won't bring much offensive. Should be good to pair with a kid to allow said kid to explore his offensive side a bit more.

If Dekeyser was healthy last season it would've been the best season of his career as a Wing. 22 mins a night, positive +/- (meh), 20 ES points in 52 games (he was on the PP a little in his high career point total season), anyway, DDK was actually pretty good last year. He's a 2nd pair D man that has played on the top pair over his head too much, imo.

Barring any signings/injuries/trades/cap dumps/waivers etc. I see our D (to start the season) as:

DDK-Green
Nemeth-Hronek
Cholo/Kronner-Bowey

I'm thinking Kronner is 60/40 coming back.

Seider-GR or Mannheim
Kaski-start in GR to get used to NA ice (called up for 9 games or more after TDL)

Daley-LTIR/traded/waived/dumped
Big E-LTIR/traded/waived/dumped

So right now we have the following...
Green
DDK
Daley
Big E
Hronek
Kaski
Bowey
Nemeth

Who sits/plays in GR?

Without having seen Kaski play, it seems he would be the initial odd man out. However, as the season goes on, I'm betting Ericsson gets buried in GR.

They'll keep BigE around because he plays both sides and Green will get traded. He might get some press box time though.

Very reasonable signing for a solid but unspectacular player. He isn't going to bring any offense, but there is a place for him in the lineup.

Dekeyser sucks. And he weighs 105lbs. Another contract we are trapped with....

Oh, excuse me.

FIRE YZERMAN!
LOL, talk about hyperbole.

Is Nemeth a worthwhile addition to the squad? Yes
Is he going to have a higher role than he did with Colorado? Probably
Is he a good pairing with an offensive D-man? Yes

Is 3 million for what he has previously done? Yes
Is 3 million too much for a potential top 4 role? No
Is it a gross overpayment? No

Honestly, I think once we see him in a Wings uniform, the shock of the signing will wear off.

I feel like a Cholowski-Bowey 3rd pairing would be an absolute disaster defensively, which would likely negatively impact their development.

I think your top 4 is pretty realistic, but the 3rd pair probably ends up a rotation of Daley/Ericsson/Bowey, or Daley/Ericsson/Bowey/Kronwall if the latter returns. If they carry 8 for the season, Blashill probably dresses 7 on some nights, with Kronwall getting some sheltered starts and PP time as #7D.

Cholowski's probably at the top of the call up list, and I'm sure they'll find a way to call up Hicketts at some point too. Maybe Kaski and Lindstrom get looks at some point, but they're probably tabbed to spend a year in the AHL unless they really tear it up.

Then at the TDL, they probably look to move two of Green/Daley/Ericsson, or all three if they're getting back another waiver eligible project D like Bowey, which gives them 6 for the last 1/4 of the season and allows them to give multiple D in GR looks using emergency recall.

I doubt even the infallible Steve Yzerman would look to dump off Daley and Ericsson at the start of the year when they could either:

A. Have a decent season and potentially return assets from a contender looking for some experienced D depth near the deadline
B. Have a poor and/or injury filled season, which would allow the team to rotate in or call up young guys

I know it's not completely relatable due to their respective ages, but a year ago there was lots of hope on here that Holland would trade/waive/dump Nick Jensen at the beginning of the season. Instead they hung onto him and ended up turning him and a 5th into a 2nd and Bowey. I doubt Daley or Ericsson bring that kind of return, but they can probably still bring in something as long as they're healthy. At the last deadline, Adam McQuaid missed a chunk of the year with an injury and spent time in the press box with the Rangers but still pulled a 4th and 7th, and a 35YO Ben Lovejoy fetched a 3rd. Hell, Michael Del Zotto barely played for 2 different teams and still fetched a 6th. Draft picks are gold for a rebuild. Might as well try to make some lemonade out of lemons.

Great signing, congratulations. I'm not surprised Steve Yzerman wanting Nemeth, Steve is thinking about the entire puzzle, building a team, Nemeth flashy or not... Steve couldn't care less.

Nemeth is the type of big, strong, physical, unafraid and responsible defensive stay-at-home pk specialist most teams need, not flashy but valuable.

Being a defensive stay-at-home pk specialist is tough, getting difficult time on the ice but somebody has to do the dirty work, somebody has to be the last man standing.

Cole and Nemeth having similar roles and you simply don't need both of them with all the offensive talent in Colorado. This was probably a difficult decision for Colorado. For Nemeth probably not so difficult, getting a phone call from Steve ******* Yzerman? ;-) Yes, Colorado and Detroit having a history but Yzerman is respected everywhere. It hurts a bit though with Claude Lemieux being Nemeth's agent. ;-) I would have loved hearing this conversation, Claude talking to Steve.
