30 goals on 188 shots this season. He's also on pace to break his highest point total in a season. Which he set back in 05-06.

He's like a fine wine.

Love this man

Have a feeling he's going to be robbed for the Selke again because of injuries, but he deserves it. Will he EVER peak? I really doubt any player will ever surpass him in my life as my favorite athlete.

Only player who deserves to be in the Selke conversation with Bergeron this year is Barkov and MAYBE Crosby.

Agreed. I mean no disrespect to Barkov at all in my post, he's a phenomenal player, one of the best in the league, and he'll undoubtedly win multiple Selkes in his time. He absolutely deserves to be in the conversation and I think he'll win it because of Bergy's injury.

Crosby is interesting. He's been a very solid two-way forward for a long, long time but has never really been recognized for it. The Selke is a really weird award. It's partially because guys like Kopitar/Bergy/Barkov/etc. are now PPG+ players and are also elite defensively. Bergeron is in his own league defensively, but it seems like whether the winner wins due to points, advanced stats, etc. can be kind of random. Given that the Selke is the "forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game", it should be Bergeron. But in terms of being the best two-way player, Crosby should have won this award every single year of his career. If the award is for a two-way forward, sure, I have no problem with Crosby winning it. But if it still is for the best defensive forward, not sure. But I really do think it's evolved into a two-way forward award.

I think O'Reilly will be a finalist this year, or should be. He's second to Bergeron in my opinion. I hope Bergeron wins it of course, because I really want him to have the record. And I think his play has earned it.

I would also add couturier to the conversation.

Barkov's defensive numbers have been bad for a Selke candidate, both traditional and advanced.

The three finalists will be Bergeron, O'Reilly, and Couturier, with the latter two having strong enough second halfs to close the gap on Bergeron where games played might matter again. At a full 80 games, Bergeron wins by a considerable margin.

The 4 Selke trophies alone put him in the HoF.

Only one other player in history has 4 Selkes, Bob Gainey. Gainey is in the HoF with 501 points in 1160 games.
4 selkes, 1 cup, 2 finals, 1 world
Championship, 1 world juniors, 1 World Cup, and 2 Olympic gold. When it’s all said and done he will reach 1000+ points, likely add another Selke and hopefully another cup. Even without another Selke and cup... he is a HOF. Represents everything you want in a player and is a truly elite talent. Most of his career has been up against the other teams best players and the guy comes out on top. A class act and a winner. Easy lock.

I think he's been too dominant this year to not get it, even with the injury. Last year I wouldn't have been mad if Couturier got it.

Other finalists should be O'Reilly and Couturier for sure although people have been pushing Crosby and Barkov so much I can see them getting nominated.

Yep, he's literally been too good to even hold the 16 missed games against. No doubt in my mind he'd have been a Hart finalist if not for the injury.

One thing I noticed tonight was Bergeron’s skate work with the puck. He gets pucks thrown into his skates and, in a split second, he has it on his stick moving up the ice.

I crack up at Matheson at the end of this clip. He just stands there like "I just had the puck, how did he do that??" lol

These are my three pics too.

I really would hate to see him lose the selke again due to injuries, but in fairness, he won his first going head to head with Datsyuk, and i'm pretty sure Datsyuk's injuries that year played a part in why Bergy got it, so....I dunno.

The healthiest guy plays the most, takes the most faceoffs, total ice time...Makes sense to me that health is a big issue when it comes to Selke-Grade players. They're not just offensive, powerplay specialists. They're five on five guys that you absolutely NEED on the ice as often as you can get them out there without killing them.

We're all biased to Bergy, obviously, so we all think he deserves it again, But i'm not opposed to O'Reilly nabbing one this year or next year. He's excellent too. And while I hate Philly, I have always really liked Couturier. A lot.

So about that Bergeron guy. Currently 27th in the league in points, with a career high 75 points and several games to go. Every guy higher on the list has played at least 11 games more than him, with the majority at 15 or 16 games more.

This after having off-season groin surgery, back spasms in the preseason, and a significant rib/chest injury earlier in the season. And he's 33 with a lot of mileage.

You can't convince me he's not really bionic because I have no other explanation for how he does what he does.

The Selke should be his once again. The points-per-game is a huge factor. Also, check out the short-handed points column. He's ahead of all of his competition there as well. In general, I think 65 games is the floor for individual awards. Bergy should make it.

And of course what is completely stupid about this award as is stands is that it has *anything* to do with offensive production. It is for the best defensive forward in the league. It is not an all around best player award. If a guy can play top minutes shutting down other team's top forwards, like Bergy does, he should be considered whether he gets 40 points or 140. Okay, rant over, since it is what it is now. Bergeron should get it, but I wonder if the NHL wants to allow him to top Gainey. Just a thought and food for all the conspiracy theorists out there (like me at times )
