I'll definitely eat crow from my earlier gut feelings on Maroon, maybe half-a-crow. :sarcasm:

(He wasn't playing all the games like this, how he played against Nashville tonight.)

But, but, but, man oh man he was a force for sure tonight. They couldn't handle his boardwork at all. Golden.

In the middle of the game i was thinking to myself (when he was dominating down low), that we had some mini-Jagr revival going, at least for that couple of shifts he had... Looked great.

He's a real garbageman on the power play and is a really good puck possession guy.

I'm worried he might get a pretty bad contract, but I think he'll be good for another couple years at least.

He was still a pretty good middle 6 guy before McDavid, so it's not like McDavid completely inflated him like Crosby did to Pascal Dupuis.

What contract would you give him if you were Shero, Bleed? I'm just curious.

does he warrant a 4x4? is that term too much? i mean i assume since he has a young boy i'm sure he wants to be around, it'd be nice to have SOME stability, even if that means taking a pay cut. his play with the oilers most definitely warrants a raise from his 2mil AAV

I wouldn't go 4 years. Three max IMO.

I’d bring both Maroon and Grabner back on higher cap hit 2 year deals. I don’t forsee us getting up against the salary cap in the next two years. If we can avoid long term deals, I don’t really care how much we give them per year.

Watching what's going on in baseball and the growing contingent of PTOs in hockey these last few seasons, I don't think an agent would ever advise either of these guys to take 2 year deals. The Devils really can't pay them enough to make up for the fact that the deal is only 2 years. This is both guys' last realistic chance to get paid, and Grabner has been underpaid for the last 2 years.

Figuring Hall, Hischier, and Bratt will be paid $24M combined after their contracts are up, in 20-21 you've got 7 players signed for $46.5M. That leaves around an estimated $36M for the remaining 16, with the awareness that Zacha, Wood, and Butcher will also no longer be on ELCs. So basically every $4M contract has to be offset by an ELC or otherwise cheap deal.

Thing is, the system seems light on guys like Maroon so I could hear arguments for his retention, but he is 30 and plays a hard game. I think he's more likely to be a true rental than Grabner.

I'm not so quick to make that one. Turns 30 in a month, a pretty slow player to begin with.

Yeah my intitial concerns look way off right now, but 2-3 years from now?

You’re probably right, 3 years is likely the minimum these guys would sign for. I’d be more worried giving Maroon 3 than Grabner, he’s already really slow. He looks good once he’s in the offensive zone, but he has trouble getting up and down the ice.

Are we still paying Clowe or anyone like that or have they expired yet?

    But 20-21 leaves a 2 year window.

If those guys are not getting good offers elsewhere, would you go heavy on a 2 year deal for either/both?

I don't think either guy get's a big contract. the fact that Maroon was traded for a 3rd speaks to his value around the league.

I'd happily go 3 years in the $4M range.

that's fair. i'd still do it though. chances are, after the inevitable lockout, teams will have amnesty buyouts anyway

I think Chiarelli misread the market and didn't realize he was going to get shut out - that teams just weren't ponying up huge for Maroon, and sometimes in that game of leverage, if you press hard trying to maximize your return, you end up with almost nothing when a team goes in a different direction. I don't think the rental price for him is that reflective of his value around the league, just that the teams who wanted a winger had already gotten one and that with some teams being capped out, the market shrunk even further.

Unless the market is only offering 3 year deals, there's just no way you make up that kind of cash on a two year deal. The trend is towards longer deals where you let the next guy worry about who's going to pay for it - how do you compete with someone offering Maroon something like 17.5/5 with a 2-year offer?

Grabner's more likely to sign short term because of the unusualness of his game, but I think someone will go hard after Maroon.

Ya, well, while Maroon has surprised me, and I think Grab's is a good fit, I'm not going too big on either guy. Both guys will be on the wrong side of 30, LW is a stocked position for us, and eventually we will need to spend $$$.

Im not so sure either guy gets a big offer from someone, but if they do, then they do.

both guys are good for this season and if they help get us in the playoffs great. i don’t particularly care if either resigns though we have lots of pieces i’m curious about and want to keep developing anyway

I personally would go hard after JVR, then circle back to Maroon if we don't get him.

This season shows the importance of depth. What if MoJo goes down again, or Zajac, Zacha and others I dare not mention? Good to have vets like Maroon and Grabner, and even Gibbons since he is 30.

So how has he been for you guys so far? I see some people talking about $4 million X 4 years, that is one of the reasons that we needed to move him IMO. Too much money tied up in a similar player in Lucic. Maroon had motivational issues in Anaheim and lost a lot of weight leading up to last season. I think that a team can have 1 player like Lucic or Maroon but more than that makes your team too slow. If you guys make it to the postseason he should be dynamite for you guys when the refs put away the whistles.
