PROSPECT UPDATE: Lindblom Blossoming with Brynas

With each passing year, Lindblom has increasingly shown the potential to become a versatile player with some offensive upside as well as playing a defensively responsible brand of two-way hockey.

"We really like Oskar's game," Flyers assistant general manager Chris Pryor said in July.

"We like the approach they take to player development in Sweden. They teach players to play the game the right way and they don't put kids in situations they are not ready to handle. Oskar has come along very well so far."

Oskar Lindblom shines in Senior International debut

Back in early November, Oskar Lindblom must have been shaking his head as the Swedish Men’s National Team for the Karjala Cup was selected. He had done everything he possibly could to push his way into contention for the squad, and by the time replacements were chosen for injured players the young Swedish winger was the leading scorer amongst all Swedes in the SHL. The Karjala Cup ended up being embarrassing for Sweden. They were soundly beaten in all three games, while playing uninspiring hockey.

On the back of that disappointment, the squad for the Channel One Cup in Moscow was completely overhauled. Names that had been a given on the team-sheet were left out, and five unew players were called into the squad. The youngest of all selected was the Philadelphia Flyers very own Oskar Lindblom. He had gone from strength to strength since his snub last month, and at the time the team was picked was point per game – and still leading all Swedes in SHL scoring.

I remember that too. When Hexy made the pick I was thinking that the name sounded really familiar. All the rankings early in the season had him pegged in the first round. Really happy that we snatched him up.

He only played in 4 senior league games during his draft year and I think scouts expected him to dominate the junior circuit a little more. He's produced at pretty much every international event though as one of the youngest kids in his age group.

Good second international game vs Finland today in a 4-2 win.

Held pointless, +1. Was also on ice for a PP goal for he helped create screen for.

Had two really good defensive plays, one to get in passing lane and block pass through slot to open man, and one where he blocked a shot, chased man round net and stripped puck to start it the other way.

Came close to scoring in the last few minutes, on a PP slammed one into goalies pad from close in.

Also set up two good chances, one from near left goal-line to pinching Dman in right circle, who one-timed a nice shot but goalie made good save. Second was a good pass from the left goal-line to the slot, but his centre Ryno kind of only got half of the one-timer.

Is that something he does a lot of? It feels like I have seen you say that several times, and it would make sense if he is the net-front guy on the PP.

Yeh, it is not too uncommon... he was fighting against two Dmen in the net-front role. He got to the puck but goalie was already down in butterfly. He did not have any room to open blade and try and elevate really as he was reaching.

Just kind of like it happens to Simmonds quite a lot too.

Weirdly in the SHL they rarely actually count them as shots either...

Cheers - I always appreciate your updates. But you are about 99% responsible for making this kid my favorite prospect (the other 1% is me missing Sweden), so don't let him let me down - my emotional stability is in your hands.

Played a solid game in a 4-1 loss to the Czechs today.

He was +1 in the 4-1 loss.

His + came on a 2v1 where he was man without puck, his centre Ryno shot, hit some post, some goalie, puck came back out, Lindblom ridden away from it by Dman, which left Johansson as the trailer a tap in.

Helped set up his centre Ryno twice with nice passes in build up, both times weakish shots meant goalie saved them easily. He also set up a Dman with cross ice pass that Dman double clutched at so meant an easy save.

In the 3rd he had a glorious chance on re-direction from slot on the PP, went like 2 inches wide of post... he should have done better. Then he walked back round, wrister high glove and forced a save.

After missing the chance he was benched for ~7 minutes... and in that time Sweden got scored on again. Came back out with one minute left as they trailed 3-1 for a shift, created havoc in crease and Sweden almost scored.

Was pretty ridiculous they benched him for missing one chance, albeit a great one. His centre Ryno should have had like ~5 goals this tournament but got zero! But as we well know, seems 'accountability' for most coaches only applies if you are a young player.

There were 24 players at the tournament who had NHL experience... and the rest are either good KHLers, ex-AHLer or future NHLers.

And he more than held his own.

The level of play was on paper somewhere in-between KHL and NHL level... considering that the worst players there would be solid KHLers, and the best ~1/4 of every teams roster are either ex-NHLers or good enough to play in the NHL.

Had a great game today despite being pointless and +0. He played 18:09.

Last few mins with game tied he took over the game... first he drew a penalty after dangling past three opposition players from the right boards into the slot, last guy had to do something so just grabbed him.

Then in OT while an a 4v3 PP he attacked a Dman at the line, walked past him and was hauled down from behind to put his team on a 5v3 PP.

Then he created a screen in-front and Dman scored good shot from blue-line to win it. He had drawn both PP's for them to be up 5v3!

Also set up some really nice chances in the game. A tic-tac-toe in the 2nd on the PP that the goalie made an immense save on with Johnson all alone.

He also put Jensen in the slot all alone, but he got stripped from behind as he shot by great D play.

Lindblom also helped set Clark up alone in slot, but he fired high with bouncing puck, and also set up a pinching Dman in circle... who fired high.

He also came close to scoring on a backhand from the slot and a jam play in-front that Dman stickchecked at last second. In a scramble in third he put puck into goalies pad too.

Made two great defensive plays as well to once ride a winger off the puck when he tried getting past him, and another where he held blue-line, stepped up and poke-checked puck away.

Great game again from him today in a 3-1 win.

He played 19:00 flat, was +2 and scored the game-winner with a quick snap-shot from the inside edge of the left circle with only 2:30 left.

He has also been elevated into a regular PK role, he was on the 2nd unit today as he helped his side kill off 6 straight minors. His boardwork is just so help-full on the PK, comes out with almost every puck and if he gets up other end can hold it for a good 15 seconds.

Also helped set up the first goal despite not getting an assist, some great board-work to come out with puck and play it to Jensen, who put it back to point for shot and Clark tipped it in.

Came close to scoring on ~3 occasions in addition to goal. Put a shot an inch wide in the first, and later in shift almost jammed one in.

Then in the second he got a 2v1 at the end of a PK and forced a very good low blocker save from Anders Lindbäck as he looked off man and fired in stride.

Also got another 2v1, he passed across and line-mate mis-controlled... they were at the end of a 2 min shift but he still had jump, which was impressive.

Shl season ends way before the nhl season does correct? With the way he's playing, think there is any chance he gets a few nhl games in at the end of the year? Big winger that can win board battles and score could be just what the 3rd line needs.
