+/- = even strength stat

Vanek = 8 PPG
Parise = 1 PPG
So now its Vanek that is better defensively than Parise because he has a better +/-? I think you might be pushing it. I like Vanek, but in no way does he put out the effort defensively that I've seen Parise display. Keep in mind that the Riverrats aren't a very good team.

I didn't say that. I just offered up that when someone else said +/- is a team stat. There are a lot of things that factor into +/- and it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Vanek has completely turned his defensive game around. Early in the year he would coast back and wouldn't get invlved in the defensive zone. Now that'll happen sometimes, but for the most part he is much more committed to defense and almost always sees ice time late in the 3rd with a slim Amerks lead.

I haven't been to a game in a bit, but that's nice to hear. I'm sure he is nowhere near Parise's defensive acumen, nor do I really expect him ever to be (though he could cancel it out if he puts forth a full effort and exerts himself physically). But if he has limited his coasting, that is good progress at this point.

Yeah, he's no defensive specialist. But he has shown more of an effort to hustle back and pick up a trailer and help back. It's nice to see, and only on some nights is he a liability back there. He needs to show more consistency, but thats why he's in Rochester.

Check the screen name. Hence the "UND" in it. which stands for Univ. of North Dakota, which Parise attended... so...

Parise = UND
Vanek = Univ. of MIN

UND and MIN = WCHA Rivals = Minnesota sucks in my opinion(although they are good)

But gotta go with Parise.

Generally, when you have two players with similar skills you go with the bigger guy.

I'd take Vanek.

Could be a big mistake, but only time will tell.

I dunno, I always saw them as different players with different styles and intangibles, never really similar.

Having seen neither of these prospects, but read a lot about them, can someone give me examples as to what players these prospects might best become?

Vanek - M. Satan? M. Hossa?
Parise - S. Yzerman? M. Peca?

Vanek plays more like Hossa, but i dont think he'll ever reach that level. Parise has more Peca in him than Yzerman.

You're close on the Parise comparison. I don't see where you're coming from on Vanek, though. Please explain. Yashin's been a C his entire career....
Not by position but by game. Vanek is an amazing scorer who uses his size and strength mixed with finesse to gather his goals. Yashin was much the same player in Ottawa. Vanek is a winger and Yashin is a center...thats about the only difference.
