Marleau isn't going to be traded and play for his new team. No contending team wants his cap and play. And if Marleau plays he only wants to play for a contender....so it's the Leafs.
If and only if retires, then his cap can be traded. IMO, he does retire, due to his dwindling play. His decline has been severe since last year. No way can he endure a full season next year and be NHL effective.

TSN 1050 radio just reported there is talk in San Jose that the Leafs and Sharks already have a deal in place to move Marleau back to SJ for his final year so he can retire there. Here's hoping that's true!

I have a hard time believing that any team would make a deal to take a 40 year old player with a 6m cap hit in three years.

Lol. Oh, he’ll retire here alright. But only after his finall 3rd year with the leafs. And only for a day.

We simply cannot afford him, don’t need him, and quite frankly (and as a lifetime
Patty fan) don’t want him. Our team is doing great.

So bad.
The Leafs going to lose a good young player because his monster overpayment.
At this point id rather have Gardiner for 6M than marleau who has done NOTHING this season. Heck id rather have Zaitsev .

Why does Babcock play him 17+mins a game??!? He is utterly useless to the team and kills every play, yet plays on the top line. This guy at this point is a fringe NHL 4th liner at best, shouldn't be playing more than 10 mins a game. Yet he gets way more mins than Adreas Johnson at LW. I really hope he retires after this season, dont ever wanna see him again in a Leaf uniform. Player I hate the most on the team by far, and Babcock loves him for whatever reason.

Highly doubt he retires and leaves 1.5 million on the table. Its so obv that he came to the Leafs for the money than chance of winning. Sharks have a good team, he would have resigned with them since he lives in SJ...yet he came here bc Lou the dumbass offered one of the worst contacts in recent memory. No way he retires when he came here only for the money.

The contract is far from ideal. But, it's far from one of the worst contracts in recent memory. You want to see horrific, just think back to Dion's (and what it's doing now) or Clarkson. Or, just looking around the league at Lucic, Eriksson, Okposo, James Neal, etc. It probably isn't even the worst contract on our books (Zaitsev probably is). Obviously, everything Lou did isn't perfect, but he somehow made those Clarkson and Dion deals disappear to the extent they aren't significantly hurting us today. He also seemed to instill a somewhat competent culture to an organization that had been a mess for over a decade.

Marleau has made something like 90m in his career. We have no idea what that 1.5m means to him. Maybe he'll play it out, or maybe he'll disappear like Hossa.

He is desperate for a cup. Of course he will kick it into over drive during the playoffs where it matters most. Right now he appears to just be getting by and going with the motions.

That's the problem when a player "loses it". They lose their skills rapidly. Marleau's hands have turned surprisingly bad. I don't see how he can turn it on into over drive any more, because there is nothing in the tank.

Years ago when players where poorly paid, there was an saying they had for aging, suddenly non NHL players,
"First you lose your hands, then you lose your wife."

There was an interesting take on one of the TSN radio shows. In the next CBA, all the 35+ contracts do not have any cap hit whatsoever.

Teams are having to pay the 22 year olds tons of money, it is going to kill the market for the UFA veterans who have stuck it out for a career. They get kicked to the curb at 32 for a 19 year old making 700k.... No one is going to want to sign them even if they are still NHL quality players.

Tell me who the Leafs would rather have next year. Marleau at 6.25 or any warm body at 700k? If Marleau's 6.25 wasn't on the cap who would would rather have? The cap is disadvantaging veteran NHLers and giving the advantage to the teenage rookie. It's backwards.
