We don't know what the plan is. It's possible he doesn't want to retire in which case Leafs can't do anything as he has a NMC. So don't just assume that you know for sure the plan is for him to be traded in the summer. Why would he retire anyway?
Exactly. Silly topic, he's going no where and any amount of wishing isn't going to change that.
Just assume he's on the cap next year and move on. Wishes are for Fairy Tales.

He would likely retire if he feels he can't contribute nearly as well as he's used to, which when judging his play now certainly seems to be the case. Most players retire when the dropoff from peak is this vast.

And yes know one knows for sure, which means all this constant worrying about Marleau is a giant waste of time. However, too many are pre-judging and just assuming the worst based on poor analysis.

TSN 1050 radio just reported there is talk in San Jose that the Leafs and Sharks already have a deal in place to move Marleau back to SJ for his final year so he can retire there. Here's hoping that's true!

Is it the same talk that's been going on here or is it tied to someone official?

Sounds nice in theory but it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Heard it to. We have talked about something like this in the past but how do the Sharks fit Marleau under their cap ?

Mitch and Matthews are pretty tight with Marleau; if Marleau is fine with playing on the 4th line I wouldn't be opposed to him being here his 3rd year or may be he ups his game

Would be great for us, but I think Marleau is gunning for the most games played ever, which would mean he has to play next season and the season after (if he stays healthy). I think finishes out the contract with the Leafs, signs with San Jose, breaks the record and then retires after that season.

The Leafs are bringing in Eric Karlsson via UFA and not bothering to sign Jake Gartiner . They'll have room.

San Jose absolutely could not fit him in next year. If he does go back to San Jose, I would bet it’s one of those 1-day feel good contracts so that he can retire a shark.

The leafs will make it work. Stressing over this now is pointless. None of your big boys are gonna be forced out so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Somebody needs to swallow his cap hit first. Leafs need to be creative to find a way to do it "legally".

Even if we had to retain a portion of his salary in a trade, it's still better than the full freight for us, plus he isn't out there as a liability. Marleau in another year looks scary if the decline continues.

Marleau back to SJ is possible if Karlsson walks.

Why would they want to spend it on Marleau? Why would he want to leave here?

Dubas could easily tell him that he'll be playing 4th line minutes or a scratch next year. Force his hand.

San Jose is the only place he'd waive his NMC to anyways

I agree in the slim chance that he would want to leave, SJ is the only place that would interest him.

Dubas doesn't make the lineup, Babcock does.
His cap hit is there no matter what line he is on. Scratching him is even worse.

Why would SJ want him ?
