Coaching has a big impact on players, and teams. Ekblad's positioning was fine his first 2 seasons, because the coaching put a system out there that put the players in the right spots. And that makes a big difference for younger players. Especially defensemen.
It's not a coincidence that players look confused and are always struggling and out of position when the coaching is not good.
And it wasn't just Ekblad that had a down year on this team, defensively for sure.

Ekblad is earning this contract and more with his level of play.

Still doesn't offset the fact how poor the beginning went. Dale should've done the right thing which was offering him a two, three year bridge deal and then signing him for the same cap hit for eight years. There's absolutely no way he would've commanded a higher price tag at that point. Bad asset mgmt by a bad GM.

It's kinda like the Draisaitl deal in a sense. Where it wasn't good at first, but now it's legit a good deal.

That's a very good deal if you think he could get to Norris level and be a franchise d-man. That's a good deal if you think he can be a #1. Terrible if he becomes anything less.
He’s a #1 so I’d say it’s a good deal according to how I felt when he signed
