Anybody familiar with Florida high school education?

I've been thinking about going into teaching for years now, but my parents have always tried to steer me away from it. I see that Florida has pretty lax requirements for getting a temporary certification.

I'm from NY and graduated from Cornell in 2020 with a degree in environmental science. I have the credits to apply for a temporary Biology certification. But other than having an ivy league degree, lab experience, and my name on some published papers, I don't have anything that would make me a compelling candidate for a classroom.

Do you think I'd have a shot at getting a job in a public school this fall? Or I am being stupid.

Just taking a swag at this, I sense that you’re well qualified. A friend of mine has a music degree from Lynn University, and easily got a job teaching middle school - and didn’t need to limit his area to music. Sounds like you’d want to teach high school biology, I don’t know if there’s a stricter requirement for that but I still feel you’d have a good shot.

Easily.

Have you seen or talked with any of the teachers nowadays? It’s honestly scary that kids are having to learn from them.

I have two friends, one graduated with a business degree and the other psychology, both teachers. Ones a full blown alcoholic, the other couldn’t get out of a room without written instructions.

The only curveball, I guess, would be COVID/the pandemic.

You can write properly and seem intelligent. Miami-Dade should hire you no questions asked.

Just wanted to jump in here and let everyone know that the NHL iOS app I've been working on for nearly 2 years is almost ready for its first beta release. I messaged a few of you a while back to get some preliminary feedback. There's a thread over on the main board about it (where I also got chewed up a bit and falsely accused of using it to mine bitcoin lol) with screenshots and some more info if you're interested! :)

Id check out your app, but I don't have an iphone. It sounds pretty good though.

This is a completely random question but after getting back from a 10 day trip to FLA where I drove extensively, I want to know if I made like 30 illegal left turns. So in Toronto, at a typical major 4-way intersection, and you are turning left, the lights look as follows:

Capture.png

So basically, if the left turn lane is crowded or it's rush hour etc, that traffic light on the left, the 4th light on the bottom I have circled in red will turn into a green arrow allowing cars to turn left for 10 or 20 seconds whatever, while the green lights (3rd lights down) remain red. After 10 or 20 seconds, the green arrow will disappear and both the left and right traffic lights turn green. When both lights are green, you can still turn left as long as there's no opposing traffic coming.

But in Florida:

Capture.png

There's that traffic light on the left specifically designated to turns. Sometimes it'll be showing that red arrow and both the middle and right traffic lights are green. If the left traffic light is red, but both the middle and right traffic lights are green, can I turn left if there is no opposing traffic coming?

No, if the left turn arrow is red, you can't turn left.

Lol if the arrow is red, you are never allowed to turn.

For that particular light, it's turn only when the green arrow is there.

If its a combo light, you can yield turn when the light is green. But that one is turn only when arrow is green.

Oh f*** lmao well at least that poor driving helped me fit in better. TBF that doesn't make much sense to me as if there's no traffic coming the other way it seems like a waste of time to sit there, and you all know those lights take forever.

Yes you made 30 illegal left turns in ten days, which is like only 3 per day, which I would say qualifies as more or less legal.

What I want to know is how did you cross the border? I thought we weren't allowed yet?

The land border is closed. Flying is (and always has been) open. You just need a cheap antigen test to get into the US (40 bucks) and to get back to Canada you need a PCR test but Walgreens does them for free.

Oh okay. I knew you could do that, I was just confused when you said you drove. Really waiting patiently for the border to reopen so I can go to Detroit, which is like a stone's throw away.

Now I know you live in Canada and Erik who does the money is in Buffalo, so etransfer isnt an option, you can paypal him directly, or, since you're helping us out and I'm paypaling him anyway, you can etransfer the money to me and I'll eat the paypal transaction fee for you. We also have a discord he'll invite you to. I'll let Erik chime in at this point. He currently has PMs off but will message you when he gets home and turns PMs on.
