All signs point to my being correct. Poile 100% would have done this deal with #55.

9 million is a lot, but 3 years is the kicker. It's easily the best part about the deal. The Devils have cap space now, but they're basically only guaranteed cap space now. If we keep Hall he's probably getting north of 10 and Nico's looking like he's getting in the neighborhood of 8, but none of those deals will kick in until 2020-2021. Hughes, if he becomes everything he's advertised to be, will get a monster contract in 2021-2022. It's going to be hard to project what the cap will be like that far in advance and with labor talks in between, but if Marner's talks are any indication, we're going to have to fork over a lot of cash.

By the time we get to Hughes' contract we will probably be near the cap ceiling, that's the beauty of Subban's contract. It's off before we hit the big issues. If we signed a Myers or even a Stralman, we're getting locked into a 5-6+ long contract. Taking on Subban's contract is much more reasonable in comparison. Plus we would never get someone of PK's caliber on the open market with the flexibility of a three year deal.

I agree $9mm is a lot. But look at what a second option could be - Tyler Myers at 5 years for $6mm? Which would people want more?

And exactly on your last point. His contract ends at a perfect time.

Plus the fact that I consider him an asset, contract and all. And that last year of the contract, or even the deadline - could be valuable if he's traded as a rental. But i think we keep him the whole time.

Concerns about his personality - Meh. He was 26 when he was traded, he's 30 now. I know how different I was when I was 26. I

I was a self centered young man in my mid twenties, who really only thought about material things. I'm now married with a 2 year old boy and a girl on the way at 31.

It's fair to say that I have changed a bit.

Subban will be awesome and a breath of fresh air for the franchise and the state of New Jersey.

That’s awesome and congrats. Just so you know, every day with your kids is better than the prior one. I miss the precious moments of my boys from when they were little but I really enjoy the great things we do together and the great young men they’ve all grown into. Small example is how much better was it when the now 2 year old could start to speak and tell you things rather than just burst into inconsolable crying.

On point edit: I make the Subban deal regardless of whether Hall stays. The price makes it a no brainer. Like the MarJo deal. Assuming NJ has to move him at the end of his deal he probably returns the seconds. Plus if Hall does decide he wants out the team has a “name” vet in the locker room to handle the press and show the young players how to do it. Hughes especially needs a “star” in the room to watch up close and learn from. A “star” with personality can work very well or very badly. Just look how differently it went for Subban in MTL and NAS.
