I know it’s early but leafs may have found a free wallet worth keeping in Ozi. He’s been a pleasant surprise and appears to be adjusting well so far.

Based on his contributions to date and hopefully an uptick in performance and aggression, what recent signings would be comparable? Salary / term?

If he looks like he’s a stable #5-6 by seasons end I can see the Leafs trying for a 1-3 year deal and if not then he may just walk.

I hate the idea of locking up non core guys on contracts over 3 years

He started out weak, but has been pretty decent recently. Let’s give it time though - “how much do we sign him for” is IMO a much less important question than “do we re-sign him.”

He is just a RFA for one year then he can be a UFA in summer of 2020. So if you think he is NHLer, he's going to have to going to have term past his UFA first opportunity. He can double his salary of 925,000 this year with bonuses. So if you the Leafs think he is good for three years and can play important minutes. 2.75m X 3 years.

Not 7 years with a 4.5M cap hit that's for sure.

I don't think hes been that good but he's improved over the last couple games. I wouldn't give him more than a 2 year extension and not a penny over 1.5M as of now but if he keeps improving and provides solid minutes I might offer up to 2M.

Bottom pairing defenseman aren't hard to find and it's hardly a place we can afford to overpay on.

Dubas would have never signed that deal.

I can't imagine he'd get more than ~1-3 years X 1-1.75M (and only a 3 year contract if after the season he's really solidified himself as a ~#5 dman rather than a #6-7).

Though I still don’t think he’s earned anything other than a small 1-2 year contract, he’s been good I. His limited usage. Much prefer him out there to a resigned Polak

Let’s see another 20-30 games before we conclude he’s an NHL D man, and then never give him a Zaitsev deal no matter.

Funny you say that . On this site, so many Leafs haters think the Leafs should give a Nylander or multiple draft picks just to acquire a bottom pairing dman.....but if he's a RHD, any RHD is 10 times better than any Leaf Dman.

Man that Ziatsec vontract is ridiculous

Can you imagine we somehow slip Z into a deal with say someone like Hyman or Brown in a trade for an upgrade on D? You know how like we just sorta moved a 4 for a 6 with the Polak deal originally?

Waiting for Dubas to prove he is the miracle worker.
