At some point all these first overall picks should be enough for Buffalo to make the playoffs. If they draft Owen Power they'll have 2 number 1 defenseman and Eichel as their top center, with some nice complementary players. That should be enough. Unless Eichel and Dahlin aren't all that they've been hyped up to be.

And how good is Owen Power actually supposed to be? Is he the next Makar/Karlsson, or is he the next Ekblad/Murray? There's a huge difference there. Personally I think his younger brother Max who plays center will become the much better player down the road...

wait. He has a brother Named.

Max power?

The best thing about the idiots citing Lindros is that the reason he refused to go to Quebec was that their buffoon of a GM made a nasty remark about his mom in French not knowing his mom knew French (IIRC she taught it).

Is that true? How did I not know about this? If that’s true then good on him.

Would be hilarious if he tells Buffalo he will stay in College for 3 years rather than sign with them. Might deter them from drafting him. Hes only got 3 more college seasons left before he can go UFA no matter who drafts him. Might make Buffalo opt for someone else instead.
It's a lot of money to give up. Every kid has to do an ELC. Even if he does the full 3 additional years and goes UFA in August 2024, he would still need to do a 2 year ELC which would begin in the 24-25 season. Siging with Buffalo even after his Sophomore season assuming he can get into just 1 game for the Sabres, burns an ELC year in 21-22, making 22-23 and 23-24, the final 2 ELC years. So, by the time he even dresses for an NHL game going UFA he would be eligible for his next NHL contract. Depending on how he plays he could make $3 mill per or $5 mill per.

He has the size where he can step in and play, but we all said the same about Kakko. The 2019 draft, after 2 years, has done just meh in the NHL. Hughes, Kakko, and Dach are the only ones not to return to the prior clubs and play for their NHL clubs.

Not a bad move to clean up your game before you head to Buffalo. At this point, Power knows who his Michigan coach is going to be. He doesn't even know who the coaching staff at Buffalo will be. Neither does he know about Seattle's.

Considering how few defensemen make impacts at age 18, probably the best choice for his development.

I can't imagine much good coming out of being in the Buffalo environment right now. Let the team and roster settle down, learn more in college, then come back when the situation's a little less messy.

No one wanted to play for the Bills either for over a decade. We started winning and everyone wants to come play with us now. Winning solves everything.

started winning? ….funny stuff

might as well go back to the beginning with this team…...what exactly have they won since their AFL days back in the mid 60's?

Are you saying you need to win the superbowl to be considered a winning team? If so your post makes sense, it wasn't the context I was using. The Bills have made the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 years when only 12 teams make it out of 32. They also went to the AFC championship game last year and should be right back there this season as favorites in the AFC with the Chiefs. Players want to go to winning teams, and right now the Bills are just that and will be for the foreseeable future.

For further proof, Vegas odds to win superbowl this year. Bills are #3

Has anyone stopped to think that maybe, just maybe he is getting sound advice from hockey people that going pro after a good but not dominant freshman season is less optimal than returning for a sophomore season where he not only gets some of the things people mentioned (campus experience, chance to win NCAA championship on a loaded team) but also gets to develop better than he would either playing for a likely bottom feeder team or riding buses in the AHL. I'm sorry but if I were a teenager it would be no debate that the college lifestyle is better than the AHL one.

Compare the results of those who leave after one year vs those who leave after two and the types of 2nd contracts they sign. Power is smart, he can get the best of both worlds like Caufield and Knight did this year, get the development and chance to dominate the NCAA level and still sign an ELC that knocks a year off this season by appearing in a few games.

Buffalo fans should be happy if he returns for his sophomore year, he will be a much better player when he joins Buffalo next March or April.

Dahlin was hyped as generational and isn’t even close to looking like that.

He has fallen behind other young Dmen

Hate to agree with this statement but right now I agree with it.

This might change in the future.

Good. Defensemen shouldn't play in the NHL as 18 year olds (or even early 19 year olds). Another year in college will serve him well in his career and make him a better NHLer.

Cale Makar isn't quite the same situation.

Zach Werenski and Charlie McAvoy and Noah Hannifin are closer comparable situations

You are aware that his struggles were the fault of the single worst coach of the modern era (Yes, even worse than Pierre who used to be the unquestioned gold standard for crap coaches) who essentially sabotaged him with his stupidity and that the second Wretched Ralph was fired Dahlin magically went back to looking as great as he did before that idiot became our coach?

Werenski, McAvoy and Makar all returned to school as sophomores and all are better NHL players than Hanifin who is a solid player but one who was rushed to the league and never reached his Top 5 potential.

More evidence that Power would be making the correct decision by returning to school and improving as a player.

Still think he has generational skillsets. Not living up to it yet. But that's on Buffalo. Skill isn't everything. Literally every great player will tell you the most important thing to them was the mentors and support they had.
You get Zetterberg the locker next to Steve Yzerman. You bring in Mattias Öhlund to mentor Victor Hedman. You get Michael Nylander to help Nicklas Bäckström get comfortable in Washington. You bring in Fedorov and Kozlov to make Ovechkin feel happy with russian friends and mentors. You let Sidney Crosby live in Mario Lemieux's mansion.

What does Dahlin have? What does Eichel have?

Much different situation to come in like Makar for example, to a team on the rise with established great players and leaders like Landeskog, Mackinnon etc.

They're a legit contender with an elite QB. Point is- players want to play for teams like that.

Kind of shocked people are hoping he dodges Buffalo. I’d never wish something like that on another fanbase, it’s not their fault the organization is incompetent.
Meh. It's sports. As a poster once said, it's okay to be petty about sports. This Sabres fan doesn't take it personal. The narrative will change if they ever get good again.
