82 OA's and only 60 spots

Very competitive list this year it feels like compared to others. Teams like the Soo, Owen Sound, Hamilton, Erie, Flint and Barrie all have multiple tough decisions to make.

Hard to know who would be elite in this OA group

The good OA goalies are Mack Guzda and Zachary Paputsakis. The good OA d-men are Nathan Allensen, Robert Calisti, Billy Constantinou, Louka Henault, Andrew Perrott, and Nathan Staios. The good OA forwards are Tag Bertuzzi, Joe Carroll, Brandon Coe, Daniel D'Amico, Hayden Fowler, Jordan Frasca, Tye Kartye, Cole MacKay, Cody Morgan, Mike Petizian, and Mitchell Russell.

Interesting how Guzda, and Perrott are both added to this list. Perrott should be a top defender no doubt about it especially that even though Perrott didn't start in Owen Sound that he's more connected locally to Owen Sound then people know. As for Guzda hands down Guzda should be at the top of his junior peak this fall.

Many fans who didn't see Owen Sound a lot over the past few seasons (specifically the eastern conference cities) may or may not realize that Guzda path was an interesting one to being a starter in this league. MG was very much dropped in the deep end in his rookie season and had to take the reigns earlier then anticipated.

As an OA Guzda should be in the mix in his OA year to turn heads in Owen Sound and the western conference. 2021-2022 will seem like a marathon year and the western conference will continue to be the heavy weight conference this season. Even with the long layoff due to a pandemic the Midwest teams will always be in the mix that's not to say other teams won't have good return to play seasons but when it comes to tight battling teams the Midwest will remain a tough outing for any team that has to play against them in their 2021-2022 season schedule.

Hounds have:

G - Ethan Taylor
D - Robert Calisti
D - Billy Constantinou
D - Drew Wawrow
F - Jaromir Pytlik (signed to play in Finnish Pro)
F - Cole MacKay
F - Joe Carroll
F - Alex Johnston
F - Cullen McLean (reported commitment to OIT)
F - Tye Kartye

I could see the Hounds keeping MacKay, Calisti, and Kartye. I would assume we would hold on to Carroll and rotate in until he can increase his value. Let's hope the brass is putting something together for a goalie! A perennial underachieving tender will not make the cut as an OA (in case anyone was counting) leaving us with zero goalies in the system with OHL experience.
Thought I would provide some more interest in the Soo's OA candidates for those fantasy GMs that haven't had enough viewings of them:
G - Ethan Taylor
Ethan Taylor was never able to crack the starting spot, although given some openings. I can't imagine anyone trading for him. He either plays for the Soo or moves on.
LD - Robert Calisti
Calisti will be the highest scoring D man in the OHL this season (unless he plays in the AHL). Great skater, mobile and he has a booming slapshot and can quarterback a powerplay (where many of his points come from). He also generates chances by joining the rush any chance he gets. Two seasons ago he was improving his decision making in this area to try to cut down on odd-man counterattacks the other way, but it was a work in progress. With Calisti, it's always a risk/reward scenario. He is definitely a top pair dman for any contender.
RD - Billy Constantinou
Billy is more of a traditional puck moving defenseman. He is mobile and can either lug the puck out or make a great first pass. Not much of a shot from the point. Gaps up nice and plays solid defense in his zone. He could play on the top two pairs of any contender.
LD - Drew Wawrow
Drew would have been our 6th defenseman on the contending Greyhounds squad last season. A defensive defenseman, don't expect too much from him, but if any team needs to boster it's depth he would be a cheap acquisition.
RW - Cole MacKay
Cole would have been our second line RW last year. He isn't afraid to get to the dirty areas, and plays a great net front role at even strength or on the power play. Also a very good penalty killer.
LW - Joe Carroll
Joe would have been our second line LW last year. Joe has good speed, great size which he has started to utilize a bit, and the hardest shot in the league (although none too accurate). Joe also started earning pk duties with his long reach.
C - Alex Johnston
Alex would have centered our shut down line (3rd line). Very good forechecker, always stays above the puck, chips in a bit of offense, but really is that traditional shut down center.
LW/C - Tye Kartye
Tye can play anywhere in the lineup. He is a chameleon. He can play the role of scoring winger. He can play on a shutdown line. He is great on the forecheck, putting tons of pressure on the defense behind the red line. Still stays defensively responsible. He can get to the dirty areas. Mixes it up in front of the net, although he agitates just enough to draw penalties, never dropping the gloves himself.

Just noticed Elite Prospects has a section for OHL Free Agents (OAs that have not been given a contract). Account is required to view it, but it might provide some insight into what some GMs have planned:

Elite Prospects - Hockey Free Agents 2021/22 OHL

I checked it out. It doesn’t. There’s even a disclaimer saying the list is not complete or entirely accurate for forecasting OA’s.

I don’t think the list elite prospects has is an accurate representation. It generically sets players “contracts” ending right before their OA season, and for a lot of players it was hindered with automatically because of them playing elsewhere this season. As for why it’s only showing select teams, I’m not sure.

But the point is, elite prospects likely doesn’t have that information yet as teams are probably still exploring options.
