Games are the fun part for NHLers. It's the off-season training that they lose the passion to do most of the time which ultimately leads to them opting to retire because they don't have the desire to commit the time to do that any longer.

Ovechkin loves hockey and will play well into his 40s, he can easily break gretzky's record even if his pace slows because he doesn't seem like someone who will get bored playing hockey and scoring goals. you know he wants that record too

No he’s been amazingly healthy . He’ll need that to continue to get close . Maybe he’ll continue to avoid the injury bug . As he ages I see at least nagging injuries coming up .

The guy is a freak of nature. While the rules still apply to him. The normal rate with which they do apply do not. He is the best goal scorer in the league until he is not. He can be counted on as a healthy player til he shows that he cant be.

Meanwhile, dont look now, but it appears his game is going thru another transition. Its not an accident that he has 8 assists in 9 games.

183 goals is 4 seasons of 46 goals per season. 3 seasons of 61 goals. Or 5 seasons of 37 goals. And he loses 26 games this seasons, so that will hurt his chances.

-Snip- But, that didn't happen for him. Which is a shame. because he really is the best goal scorer in the history of the NHL.

He really isn’t, but that’s the popular thing to say of late. Guys like Richard, Bossy, Lemieux and Bure, along with Gretzky, were all more exciting and dynamic goal scorers.

And considering Gretz wasn’t even a sniper, and retired at 38, that’s a hell of a claim to make for Ovechkin.

exactly. The best play maker in the league who has more assists than anyone has points ! Still crushed everyone in career goals. Insanity

to say anyone was better than Gretzky at goal scoring is just not true

Gretzky played in an era where every other clapper from the blueline went in lol, Ovechkin's goal scoring relative to his peers is almost as impressive as Gretzky's point total were relative to his. Nine Richard trophies in an era of extreme parity and turnover of players at the top of the stat lists unlike any before. Like 2 years out of a 14 year career where he wasn't in real contention for it

Won’t even be close

I don't think he will beat it and assuming and IF he scores 50 goals a season for the next 3 seasons he will be at 861, 99's is 894. I'm not even sure he will hit 50 a season. All depends how long he will want to play for and how productive he can still be in his late 30s. If he plays still Jagrs age I have no doubt he will get close or beat it.

And for someone to pay him the big bucks on his next contract that is a lot of what you’ll be paying for .

What's freaky to me is that it's only his second contract... right off of ELC he signed that THIRTEEN YEAR monster of a contract and he lived up to it... and more. (speaking of monster contracts this would be the last year of Rick DiPietro's contract, crazy eh?)

And idk, what do ppg, 40-50 goal scorer wingers get paid nowadays? Skinner gets paid $9.5M, I think Ovy will be ok at $10M. Lenght will be risky if it goes as long as 4 years, but knowing the guy he'll find a way to live up to another insane contract.

So you didnt see much of Ovies peak? Id say he was pretty exiciting and dynamic..

Sure, he is not that exciting anymore. He just goals away and randomly delivers crushing hits. Im sure all the other guys you mentioned were super exciting and dynamic goal scorers at their 35y though.

He will end up with a 4 year contract that makes him highest paid Caps. Maybe a 12 million actual salary to start the contract, but balancing in to roughly 10m caphit to make both sides happy.

If the Habs can drop Prices contract to Seattle I'd take on Ovie for four years in a heartbeat.

Ovie - Suzuki - Anderson
Drouin - KK - Toffoli
Tatar - Danault - Gally
Lehks - Evans - Armia

In terms of ice time, line-mates and PP isn't Caps by far the best fit? Regardless of where he'd go, he wouldn't be getting more PP, more EV ice time and even getting better line-mates (both EV and PP) is damn near impossible to find (for example say he gets Hedman or McDavid to feed him, at the same time they'd be taking away some of his chances.

As for the money, yeah 12M is a lot. Make it an even 10 million AAV and like 4 years.

700k team friendly - Joe Thornton/Jason Spezza type deal to join the leafs

Powerplay would be ok with Ovi on one side and Matthews on the other

Ovechkin - Matthews - Marner (MOM LINE)
Hyman - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Bozak (1m)- Mikheyev
Simmonds - Thornton - Spezza

Hard to guess. If he has a real desire to retire a Cap and chase Wayne's record he may do something long and reasonable like 5x8. Maybe he does one year contracts? Hard to imagine him playing anywhere else but he could always surprise us. What if he wants help with that goal record and decides he'll play with McDavid (or MacKinnon etc) for a mil? Lots of possibilities but I don't have much sense of who he is as a person.
