I thought Ovechkin played his worst game against Canada in Russian uniform. What happened to him, he was so much better in 2006 for instance and now he has become a completely irrelevant player for team Russia. He is useless on defense, he can't do anything on offense. He needs a new coach or a year off to go and rejuvinate himself by playing in the KHL for a season.

so you'd like him to become a better defensive player by playing in a league with virtually no defense at all?

His mind is still on the playoffs, I think. It's tough to go play for your country, after you lose, and especially when your best-friend who is usually there with you isn't this team. It's tough for him, losing like this every year must be tough on the mind right after. Give him sometime to recuperate (the summer) and he'll be fine. But you're right, he doesn't seem himself.

Don't you think you are being a little rough on him? I mean he single-handedly took Methot out of the game :sarcasm:

LOL at the bolded, in your dreams.

Re: him playing bad, he's been dealing with a reasonably serious knee injury for a few months now that he continues to play through, and really has been "off" all season.

He's been given a posh treatment and free reign in Washington....and enjoys too much celebrity life in Moscow.

The guy's work ethic used to be second to none. He needs to get his priorities straight.

It's weird. He can Average over a ppg in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. But not in the World Championships?

Ovechkin not showing up in big game situations shouldn't be surprising and unexpected to you people. Ovechkin has all the talent in the world, but the guy simply isn't a winner. Call him the polar opposite of Scotty Niedermayer. Got embarassed by Canada at the WJC in 2005. Got embarassed by Canada in Vancouver. Can't captain his team anywhere in the playoffs. He should not have a C.

rumor has it that it is his hip, not his knee. He shot down knee rumors on the Caps' break up day. That's on top of the wrist that's bothered him all season long.

If Ovechkin is injured he shouldn't be playing at least because he needs to recover in time for the next NHL season. Radulov is playing two level better than Ovechkin - Alexander needs to do something quick and turn things around, he looked pathetic in these games so far.

He played three games at the World Championships so far and he got to the one against Czechs almost straight out of the airplane...Give him some time. Jagr had 0 points in the first two games while the rest of the team scored 10 goals in total. Look at him now.

Name ONE big (elimination) game that Ovechkin has played, either for the Caps or Russia, where he really stepped up, was the best player on the ice and lead his team to victory.

His goal took Canada out of the 2006 Olympics. Funny how you forgot to mention it.

What medal did Russia go home with in '06 again? :sarcasm:

This isn't a Canada vs Russia debate. This is about a player who has never won anything in his career because he is often a no-show in big game situations.

You asked about scoring in elimination games -- the final medals do not matter.

Hockey is a team sport. One guy cannot score all the goals, whether important or not.

More generally, regarding Ovechkin's performance for Russia, until three years ago Kovalchuk has been considered as a very poor player for the national team. Now he is Canada's killer! :)
