I'm thinking that many teams have had players who did this, and word only got out in Ovechkin's case.

Definitely the field. He probably wasn’t even the favourite going into the season. Couple that with a slow start + missing games in a short season? Very unlikely. But as others have said, if someone were to do it it would be him.
