Apparently he was. I heard Melnick mention it on TSN690 while talking to McGuire that PK interviewed Bettman during the 2nd int on NBC. Just did a quick search and couldn't find a clip of it.
Can confirm this. Down in the states right now and watched the NBC feed. They had Gary and PK on for an interview. Definitely a rough game to watch as a habs fan...

what's even worse is realising how far off we are.
Ovy backstrom kuznetsov , just those 3 are more talent than the past at least 25 years habs players , combined....
No centers, one or 2 decent d the rest is crap
We can't even get organised to get the puck out of our zone or to run a proper pp.
No leaders, no direction, a clown for a GM.
Sad reality...

And even successful rebuilds like the Caps...took 15 years from the time the rebuild the started with the sell off of guys like Gonchar, Robert Lang, Konowalchuk, etc. The Caps had first world issues, but significant ones. The center depth wasn't really solidified until 2015-2016, which is 11 years from the time they got Ovechkin, when Kuznetsov really broke out. But even with Kuznetsov, their 3C was either Beagle or Mike Richards or Daniel Winnik, all of whom underwhelmed in the playoffs. Then we gave them Eller for 2016-2017 because Montreal is JUST THAT CHARITABLE. After 13 years of rotating centers in the 2C and 3C area, the Caps finally had a legit center core and the results are beyond obvious now....

Rebuilds work, but some require much patience and proper GM'ing. Over a decades' worth of patience. Lots of talent expelled out of the organization. Varlamov, Forsberg, Mike Green, Alzner, Nate Schmidt, Cody Eakin. A lot of guys went through and out of that organization before this Cup victory.

Looking forward to seeing what Holtby gets for his next contract.
Barrring him crapping the bed, he will leapfrog Price without a doubt. That deal is two years away and the cap will be that much higher.

I'm curious to see what Karlsson and Doughty get. Sounds like Karlsson wants to go for money on his next one. He could wind up being the highest paid player in the game.
