Erik Karlsson most likely will be traded and Ottawa appears to be entering into a rebuild. I am wondering if they will try to get their 2018/2019 first round pick back from Colorado. Would Erik Karlsson be enough or too much to get their pick back.

Erik Karlsson is way too much to get any pick back, let alone just 4OA.

I for one. Think

A) Avs would need to add another 1st or good piece to get EK.

B) Want no part of EK for any price. Great player but not the type I’d give 10+ mil to under any circumstance. I’ll keep Barrie and his 80% of being EK for much cheaper any day.

C) If we were to deal for a Sens player I want Stone. I actually really want Stone.

As an Avs fan I would be tempted to trade Ottawa its first next year back + Timmins/Jost/Barrie for EK signed to an extension. Including Makar would be a bridge too far in my mind.

There will be better packages for EK than from Colorado who likely isn't looking to move the pick. Colorado is still rebuilding themselves to an extent and now isn't a time where they would be going in on guys 1 year from UFA.

Defense also isn't a big need for the Avs as they are pretty stacked in that area.

Replace Makar with Timmins and I'd do it. Even in a deal for Erik Karlsson Cale Makar is a complete non starter.

Ottawa 1st + Colorado 1st + Connor Timmins + AJ Greer for Erik Karlsson at 8 years is something I would do. Would be devastating to lose Timmins as I think he's looking well on his way to being a future Top pairing Dman, but for Karlsson you have to give to get.

But yeah Makar isn't for trade.

So basically you want our 1st this year or next, a potential #1 overall pick with your pick back and a guy that was just drafted #4 overall last season...good luck with that buddy.

That would be asinine for the Avs, and would kill our future.

The best I'd even consider is Ott 1st 2019, Colorado 1st 2018, choice between Meloche or Kamenev and 2018 NSH 2nd rounder. That's two high end assets for a rebuild with 2 high 1st round picks, a solid B prospect and another decent draft pick.

For EK I’d offer

To OTT:
18’ 1st
OTT 19’ 1st
Timmins
Ghetto/Kerfoot

To CO:
EK(signed)

Or if you want a roster player

To OTT:
Barrie
‘19 1st

To CO
EK(signed)

But Makar is a pure non starter for me.

One of those things isn’t like the other...
Basically to give a choice of what the Senators actually want... A good replacement, a promising NHL competent, young player, or an up and coming prospect. Might need to adjust the other picks to create the same value across, but that's the idea

Avs are the only team that can do nothing and win a EK trade. That's what they will do, I suspect.
But they lose if they decide to not trade him and try to be competitive. The value only goes down, since betting on them being absolute bottom of the league seems like a bad bet if they keep Karlsson

But if you give them Barrie you shouldn’t add all that other stuff. His value is exponentially higher than the other two.

We're betting with house money. We can't lose, we can only win less.
Buy low, sell high. I think there's every reason to believe, from our perspective, that the value won't go higher than it currently is, as long as the Avs retain possession of the pick

A signed EK at a reasonable amount and Im at the table with almost anything but MacKinnon Rantanen or Makar. EK is still that good.
